Hello,

I have to backup some very huge files everyday (about 10Go) for my users and
i dont want to crash my network.

I'm searching for a soft (free or not) which can do that.
I tryed to use rsync but I wasn't been able to make it works :-(

RSync is able to backup only the parts that have changed. So after the first
backup (which is full), all other backups are done on the parts of the file
which have change. That's pretty cool.

This is to backup Windows XP workstations on a Windows 2003 Server.
I need a soft with command lines in order to script it.

Do you have one or two names to give to me ?
Thanks

John

Hi, you can take a look at Backup4all
(http://www.backup4all.com/network-backup.php). Seems like the best way to
test this is to install it on the server and share the folders/files that
you want to backup from the users' computers. You can schedule Backup4all to
create incremental backups (it will do the first time a full backup and
after that only what's changed).

Has a command line version too that comes with it. It's available as a 30
day trial, and if you like discounts you can get it from www.bitsdujour.com
with a 56% discount (pay $19.78 instead of $45).

Hello Jerome,

Take a look Argentum Backup at:

http://www.argentuma.com/backup.html
http://www.argentuma.com/ab.exe (0.9 MB)

This software is very fast and was tested to handle 400 GB in file
copying mode.
In a snap!

Though I'm not sure if you can script it or not.

Matt,

I know a better way to do it. There is also a free trial for you to test:

NEVER would use an online backup, too much of a security risk.

I have somewhat similar question like OP.

I have 15 GB worth of data (one chunk) that needs to be backed up in
external device. The device I am trying is Buffalo LinkStation (160 GB
hard disk based NAS) hooked up in a hub in a networked environment (100
Mbps). I have played with various software. So far NTI
(www.ntius.com) software gave the best result with 1 GB/18 minutes
performance. Windows XP's backup software takes almost twice the time
for backup and verification.

My question is what is the best I can get with this type of
configuration? Is there any chance I can shorten the time by getting
different (read expensive) software like Veritas? Thanks in advance
for your pointer.

Jim

Hi, Jim!

Take a look at our backup tool - DoubleSafety
(http://www.doublesafety.com/). I'm sure, it will show the good speed.

And why not use incremental backup? It will dramatically improve the
perfomance. Or, if you need to store all information in one archive,
you can just update backup archive.

And you can specify low compression quality in order to improve
perfomance. If you want to reduce the backup file size, try to specify
a non-compress mask for files that are already compressed, for example,
jpeg or mp3.

I hope, my message help you.

Just finished test with doublesafety software.
I used Toshiba laptop (3.2 GHz & 512 MB RAM) and Buffalo Terastation
connected
using a 4 port switch.
The program finished uploading 16.4 GB worth of data (1 chunk) in 1
hour 42 minutes.
So, I am pretty happy with the result.
