I am trying using Microsoft's "Backup Utility" included in WinXP Pro to back
up selected files and folders.

For my first backup - I chose "Normal" as the backup type - which is the sam
e as full backup of the files and folders I selected for back up.

It actually took me some time to go through the list of files/folders on my 
2 hard-drives to decide which files and folders I needed to backup.

Now I want to do a "Differential Backup" - ie to back up files which have ch
anged or have been added since the first "Normal" backup above.

In the options, I can select "Differential" as the backup type - but in the 
backup window - I still have to "Click to select the check box for any drive
, folder or file that you want to back up."

Shouldn't the files / folders I have already backed up in my first backup be
 pre-selected? so that I don't have to go through the whole list again?

Because if I have to choose the files / folders over and over again everytim
e I want to do a backup (whether Normal/Full, or Differential) - the program
 would seem rather useless?

Or am I doing something wrong?

The right way to use ANY backup program is to first do a FULL backup.
Then do incremental or differential backups.

Also, the built-un windows backup is a poor program.

Take a look at Acronis True Image.
If you do purchase TI, do not install the build 2323 that comes with the
retail verion.
Instead, register at th eAcronis web site and install build 3633.
Build 3666 was released a few daze ago, but it seems to have problems.

Last I heard, www.newegg.com was selling TI for $19.99(US) plus shipping,

Well, if someone wants a programme that just copies files from one
location to another, heh. There is better freeware available than MS
ware.

I've been holding off installing 3666, tempting though the DVD
facilities are. Can you tell me what the problems are?

I'd like to see an update to the PE plugin, which astonished a friend of
mine so much that he bought TI smartly.
