Hello all,

I'm doing a project for a university here at work and they are in the
process of upgrading to FMS2 so they wanted to use a third party to deliver
the video in the interum.  I'm only using FMS to stream video.  They hooked
me up with their contact, I proceeded to send them .flv files and a
main.ascfile which is only used to get the stream length and run a
bandwidth check
(ala Stefan Richter's article).

I'm being told that:

"The main.asc file is seen as an executable file and is considered a
security risk." and that it conflicts with their statistical data gathering
information.

The first part has me scratching my head and i'm wondering why that would
be.  Also the 2nd part about it conflicting with statistical information.  I
guess i'm wondering if this is common place in the industry, where they
don't allow the use of server side actionscript in the event you may take up
more connections with shared objects and what not?

If anyone has experience with this i'd love to get some more knowledge on
this subject.

Executable is an overstatement. Sure, the server executes the file but a
security risk?
Anyways, if you are using a CDN such as Vitalstream or Akamai then they will
not allow you to upload your own main.asc file. That's because these
companies do not offer FMS application hosting, they just offer FLV stream
delivery.

If you uploaded your own main.asc there then you could run all sorts of apps
on their network. They don't want that.

The good news: CDNs have deployed a main.asc that is basically identical to
the one in my article. If you for example stream video from Akamai then you
can call the stream length and bandwidth detection routines - or FLVPlayback
will do it for you.

Ask your provider for a copy or API description of the main.asc that they
have deployed.
