Hi List,

I'm planning an FMS app that will require some sound mixer setting
changes to record from the output mix from the client's sound card
(rather than just the mic). I'm a windows guy, and I'm having some
trouble figuring out where the internal sound mixer is in OS X... or
whether there's one in there at all.

The only Mac I have is a Mini Mac, and I can't seem to find anything on
there that works like the Windows sound mixer. I've found the control
for mic gain, but nothing more. Can some of you Mac folks point me in
the right direction?

Sound settings in Mac OS X is much more straightforward than in Windows
-- there isn't a mixer per se, just input & output device selectors.

Use the Sound Prefs to manually select the default input device -- in
this case the sound card.

Assuming the sound card is compatible w/ the Flash Player, you can
programmatically select that device in AS.=20

Audio capabilitiy is inherent in all Macs, so there is no concept of a
separate sound card, just the audio chipset on the motherboard.

Presumably the 'sound card' in question is a third party PCI/Firewire or
USB device?

I don't think the mac mini has a PCI slot, so it should default to its
internal audio chipset (line in), unless you have an external 3rd pty
FW/USB device.=20

Ideally, I would like to rely on the internal chipset, as I won't be
able to expect Mac clients to have an external audio device.

What I need to do is route both microphone audio and a sound object to a
single netstream (think Karaoke), and to the best of my knowledge, we
can't use a sound object as a mic or have multiple mics on a single
netstream (it's a shame too... it would be nice if we could mix audio
inside the flashplayer and send the final mix out to the ns).

With windows, we can just select the output mix from the sound mixer as
the recording source, and use the mixer's controls to set mic and wav
levels. I'm wondering if the Mac is capable of the same.

Perhaps it's just me being my dense self... but I can't seem to find any
sound setting in Garageband that notes Karaoke. I have the version that
comes installed with the Mac (part of iLife '06 I think?). Any direction
would be most appreciated.

Hi Jay,

I was doing something with video in Final Cut, and the Karaoke showed
up as a GarageBand option, and now I can't find it in Garageband.
Sorry about that--Pavlovian response to Karaoke. If I locate it, I'll
send it on. However, after looking at GB, I couldn't find the sound
mixer anyway.

In OS X you will need to roll your own mixer - or combine the live mic
stream w. your prerecorded source. The good news is the Audio Units API
makes this pretty straightforward.=20

Sound settings in Mac OS X is much more straightforward than in Windows
-- there isn't a mixer per se, just input & output device selectors.

Use the Sound Prefs to manually select the default input device -- in
this case the sound card.

Assuming the sound card is compatible w/ the Flash Player, you can
programmatically select that device in AS.=20

Subject: [FlashComm] Mac OS eqivalent of windows sound mixer?

Hi List,

I'm planning an FMS app that will require some sound mixer setting
changes to record from the output mix from the client's sound card
(rather than just the mic). I'm a windows guy, and I'm having some
trouble figuring out where the internal sound mixer is in OS X... or
whether there's one in there at all.

The only Mac I have is a Mini Mac, and I can't seem to find anything on
there that works like the Windows sound mixer. I've found the control
for mic gain, but nothing more. Can some of you Mac folks point me in
the right direction?
