Using Ghost 9 for full image backup to an external drive.
It has worked in the past.

Now getting error:

Backup of C:\ did not complete successfully.
Error E7C3000F: Device \\. \PQV2iSnapShot0 cannot read
4,096 sectors starting at LBA 6, 197, 568. Error 00000017:
Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
(0xE7C3000F).

I reformatted the external drive and ran chkdsk on C -
neither made any difference.

Help?

TIA

Louise

Run the diagnostics from the drive manufacturer.

The message would indicate that the drive is (near) dead and should be
replaced.

I found the solution. To my surprise, there must have been a bad
sector or something on my hard drive. I followed the instructions on
the Symantec site and ran chkdsk /r.

Then I re-ran Ghost and it is backing up successfully - at least it's
more than halfway through....:-)

Don't count those chickens yet.

you need to run the drive manufacturers diagnostics, and really exercise the
drive.

One way to exercise the drive is to use the tests at
http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm.

Most importanly, once a drive starts showing symptoms of sector errors, the
drive should not be used for backup,
especially if it is the only drive used for backup.

What developed is that my drive c had a media error or
"defect", at least according to Samsung's diagnostic test.
I ran chkdsk /f on the hard drive and Ghost is definitely ok.

BUT - if I run the Samsung diagnostic on my c drive, I still
get a notice of one "media error detected" - this only
happens when running the long read test. SMART etc. all
pass with flying colors.

Do I need to be concerned that drive C is failing or could
it be that a bad sector was blocked and it still shows up on
the Samsung utilities - or is it just a corrupt file that is
causing the problem?

My problem is that I don't understand the reporting language
well enough to know how to proceed. All help appreciated.

Louise

If the Samsung tests are repeatedly finding "media errors", I'd very
quickly get an additional and replacement drive.
Most certainly, do not use the drive for backup,if you have only one backup
drive.

A drive can go belly up suddenly, or gradually.
The diagnostics have forewarned you.
