why would I chose  sql over msde when installing unity unified messaging

The only difference between SQL and MSDE is their size limitations.
MSDE is limited to 2GB per database.

Cisco says 32 and under ports = msde

33 and over ports = SQL.

It is a price thing.  If you purchase the ports you purchase that
version of DB.

FOLLOW the instructions.  It's outlined in the install guide.
