Bought WD My Book Essential edition 329GB with WD backup software.
Software had no manual - uses a wizard with minimum
instructions and a paltry amount of FAQs.

'Am considering Acronis 9.0 or Novabackup 7.3 but
wondering if either will work with the WD external My Book or
if I have to use the WD software. Also, if I can use either the
Acronis
or Nova, which would be the easiest to use and, would either allow
me to have full or partial backups overwrite earlier (same name)
backups
so that I would have only the most recent backup on the external drive
?

Hoping the above is clear,

Regards,

Roy

zolty,

Your message is perfectly clear, I am also considering Acronis 9.0 and
Novabackup 7.3. I already have an ax to grind with Novabackup, because
they failed to answer my inquiry about a comment on their website that
warned against trying to use their Disaster Recovery if you have a USB
attached device that does not provide Manufacturer based drivers. I am
doing just that. I want to B/U to a new Seagate USB 120 Gig HD that
uses Microsoft drivers. It did not come with any CD, so they assumed
you would be using Microsoft drivers. Novastor does not explain their
position on the website, so I wrote them, but never received a reply. I
suppose that should make my mind up. Who needs a company who isn't
there when you need them?

I hope you get a response from someone who uses Acronis 9.0. I'm
already talking myself out of Novabackup. :-)

Got to get some sleep.

Ken

Acronis True Image 9.0 will do everything you want except overwrite
earlier backups. You will have to delete them yourself.

Ken T,

Thanks for your reply (also Shel)

Just checked out the Acronis reviews at Amazon and also at:
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/8142...ue-image-9.html
where you can see a good comparision of Acronis/Novabackup.
While there are some small negatives w/Acronis (or most programs)
there also seem to be more positives than at Nova plus I like the
option of a complete drive image if I should switch drives or
computers.
FYI Compusa has Acronis at $29.99 thru September 9th.
At that price I can't afford to spend much more time researching.

Thanks again,

B regards,

Roy

Roy,

Thanks for the link to PC Pro. That is a very convincing review for
Acronis TI. I have a special deal from Acronis for $29.99 (I think, or
$29.95) for TI9. They will let you in on special promotions if you
leave your email addy with them.

Maybe I should let you be the canary in the coal mine, and if your
install goes well, and you have no problems, I'll snap it up before the
special price goes away. ;-)

Thanks again for your help and I wish you the best. Let me know how it
goes please.

Cheers,

Ken

Ken, I'm about to buy Acronis as well but the only deal I can find for
$29.95 is for the 9.0 version that requires a third party program to burn a
CD. The 9.0 "Home" version has that built in. Which one is your deal
targeted at?

Just responded to your other post. Didn't know you still had to have third
party s/w to burn a CD/DVD. The home version that you need is here in
downloadable form:

jaygreg,

I was talking about an email I received in July! believe it or not. I
still have the email and it still comes up $29.95. The email refers to
the True Image 9.0 Home version. The email also says that if you are
interested in other products, you can use the code "SUMMER" in the
Shopping Cart. It is supposed to give you a 40% OFF discount on any
Home and Home Office product and upgrade. Try it. It may still work.

I called the Acronis Online Store and explored the possiblity of using a
code for a discount. I was informed that, although they do have offers from
time to time, they have no promo now, the promos they do have pertsain to
upgrades, there was a promo for $29.99 but it was an upgrade requiring a
prior version (I don't have a prior version), and the discount codes they do
use are numbers. I concluded I must have misread your message. Were you
talking about some other vendor, Ken?

Needs a claim code and a security code to work.
