Mapping host header to channel name |
 |

Hello Tran -- I wonder if you would be willing to share
your solution to the host header mapping issue with me. I
am particularly intrigued with your statement that the
pages within the mapped site must reside in "subchannels"
of the top level channel. Most of our issues with the
authoring server come with postings placed in the root of
the top level channels --
like /channesl/www.usf.edu/posting.htm. There has been
less of an issue with the postings in subchannels of the
top channels -- like /channels/www.usf.edu/it/posting.htm.
So far, the only way we have been able to accomplish
authoring is to set up each author's workstation with
desktop buttons to control the local browser's host file
and thus direct their web author to our authoring server.
Microsoft has pointed us in the direction of a third party
solution, IsapiRewrite, and we have tried many approaches
to using this without success (including the hotfix). In
our testing, while the isapirewrite program does indeed
rewrite the host header in the initial contact with the
server, when authors browse links within their postings on
the authoring server, the links do not point to the
correct posting.
The requirement we have is not at all esoteric - we just
want to run multiple sites using CMS. CMS requires host
header mapping to do this, but host header mapping
requires a third party program and a hotfix, and we still
can't get it to work.
I would think that every organization with more than three
pages has multiple sites - and that web authoring is
creating the exact same problems as we are having - but
there seems to be no specific resolution to this issue in
the documentation.
I would really very much appreciate it if you would share
any solutions you are able to find.
Thank you very much, Tran
Jim

Thanks, Stefan -- but it does not work -- even with the
hotfix. I still have problems with the postings in the
root of the top level channels.

Hi Jim,
what kind of problems?
With postings in top channel you mean postings like this:
/Channels/www.yoursite.com/posting
Right?
Cheers,
Stefan.

Hi Jim, I am not sure I understand your issue though. The way how we have
CMS structure, is that we have a "staging server" with DNS entires like
http://sitenamestage Authors are instructed to go to this URL. We then have
a web service written that allows us to move the content over (similar to
the API command) from stage to production on a timely basis. Each site we
have hosted on our staging server requires the channel name to match the dns
name, and then to match the host head of course. How have you deployed your
scenarion, I would be curious to learn more about this thrid party control
too if you don't mind. Thx
