I have a server running Sarge on an AMD Athlon system. I connect to NFS
shares from an Etch system running the AMD64 kernel. When I copy large
files from the server (using Konqueror), the speed is relatively
constant and no problems arise.

Lately however, the reverse operation (copying files to the server) has
developed a serious problem. The speed sometimes goes quite high then
the copy stalls then starts building speed again then stalls, and so on.

Occasionally, it doesn't restart after the stall. Not only does the copy
hang, but the network interface seems to lock up. If I don't react by
trying to shut the machine down, the entire machine will lock up after a
minute or so.

Following the copy hanging, I cannot shut down the computer. The
shutdown hangs when it exits X and displays the first "shutting down the
computer message". All I can do is hit the reset button.

To be clear, this happens every time the copy hangs - even if I cancel
the hung operation, shut down Konqueror, restart X, etc..

Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to help prevent this?
