problems with software package during ftp installation |
 |
 |
|

After a lot of trying out I finally managed to get the ftp installation
to work but there seems to be a software problem. I cannot load a
software package therefore the installation can't go on further.
And another newbie question. Are there any risks when installing Linux
parallel to Windows XP? I would like to use both and have Linux on my C:
drive and Windows on my D: drive. When installing, Linux makes new
partitions or something. Now I am wondering if I would loose any Windows
programs or whatever is on D:.
Hope someone can help me!

Markus,
A bit more info is needed here please:
What software, when does this happen before d/loading, during or after?
Do you mean you have 2 drives or is your first drive partitioned into 2?
After all it is Sunday and it is my crystal balls day of rest

You give absolutely no information then that it does not work. Therefore
it is almost impossible to help.

First make a backup. This does not mean it will go wrong, just that it
can go wrong. You should always make a backup when you want to install.
What SuSE will try to do is make a new partition for Linux. This means
that you should have free space available. There should be no problem
whatsoever.
Remember to have a fat32 partition soewhere, so you can read the files
both in Windows and Linux.
My advise however is to first try out the evaluation CD and if you like
it to buy the 9.1 that will be out very soon. Buy the pro version for
80USD or 80EUR or whatever. That way you will get two very helpfull
books that will guide you trou the first steps in Linux.

I am trying to install SuSE 9.0 using a boot CD and a ftp installation.
In the boot menu I choose ftp installation and manage to connect to the
server so the graphical installation menu is loading. I think it is is
called YAST. It loads all sorts of things, like USB and so on and asks
what language I'd like to install. Then a list appears saying all that
is loaded and the heading Software package is in red fonts. I can go
into that menu and try to load a package but there is none to be found.
I tried to import from floppy (user.sel) but couldn't get that to work
either.
And I am using one harddrive, partitioned into 3 actually.
I hope this is enough info and that someone can help me.

You might be in a spot of bother here with your partitions, this is the
first thing to get right or you could lose the lot on the drive.
Suse/Linux will require 2 partitions at least, one for / ( all the
programs ) and one for swap ( page file ), if you use the setup to
partition the drive it will re-arrange the order of your partitions which
might ( read will ) confuse your XP as it will no longer be drive d:, that
is unless you are going to use the 2 spare partitions, one for swap and one
for the rest ( / ) which will be either side of your XP, however XP will
still have a problem as it will not "see" the linux partitions and
therefore might designate the first readable partition ( the one with XP )
as C: which will then confuse it even more since it has been installed to
D:
What exactly is the layout of your drive? how big are the partitions? it
would be better if you could install to the partition after XP as this
should not mess up the table and confuse poor XP.
Until you get this sorted I would recommend not trying to install as you
could lose your XP or at the least end up with a very confused and hidden
one.

hmm i seem to remember having the install problem a few times when I
first started using suse. Its all a bit hazy but I seem to remember some
discusion at the time about this sometimes happening if you install from
suse's ftp site (dont think i am making this up!). Since I changed to
using another mirror this prob has never reoccurred.
I use ftp.mirror.le.ac.uk - seems to be much faster than suse ftp as well.

I guess I'll make a backup first....
My partitions:
C:\ 4.01 GB
D:\ 12.4 GB
E:\ 2.17 GB
Windows is installed on D: because I used to have a Windows 98
installation on C: and wanted to try out XP. Ever since then it is on D.
So now I use C as storage for all sorts of things and E is my music
directory. On D I have most of my programs.
I could maybe reorganize my partitions with Partition Magic and clean
out C and E. But you recommended to install Linux on E, no?
Hope I can figure it out.

The easiest way would be to back everything up you need and then fdisk and
partition ( maybe 13gig for XP if you need that much and leave the rest
unformatted) and re-install XP on the first part, always put MS on first as
it thinks it is the one and only and will trash your linux boot loader if
you try and install XP afterwards.
Then install Suse on the rest, the installation should pick up the slack
space and suggest something along the lines of 5+ gig for / ( root ) dir
and the rest as /swap space, and carry on from there.
However if you have a bit of knowledge about disks and partition magic it
could [1] be possible to join the lot together move all the xp stuff to
the beginning and then cut the disk as above and leave the last partition
unformatted and then try the install.
[1] I have not used P/M since version 5? so am not sure how good it will
be
at moving XP to the front of the disk.
The install script will trundle about after you have chosen your language
and key board and then present you with what it thinks you will want, on
this screen you can change the partitions and stuff by dropping to expert
mode.
But I cannot stress too much that you should expect to lose the lot and make
a backup, you might not have to use it but please err on the side of
caution.
If this is your first time with Suse/Linux then just take the default
applications install and go on from there, also if you have a good fast
( broadband ) connection the first thing to do is an online update before
you try anything else.
If you need anymore help just holler, if I don`t answer some of the other
guys on here will, try not to be put off by some of the cruft that flies
around it is silly season at the moment ( always happens when the little
kiddy winkies have broken up )

i have the *exact* same problem. i got YaST running, changed all of the
options that i could, and i have the partitions correct. the "software
package" heading is RED, and i cannot continue through the YaST setup as
the software error forbids it. i have check everything in YaST and i
cannot find what is wrong. why no software selections? thanks :-/ (when
i say that i'm a newbie, i really mean it...)
