Hotplug asks me:
Configuring hotplug
-------------------
Hotplug has used logical interface name (hotplug) for ifup, so you need to
configure /etc/network/interfaces to use "mapping hotplug" stanzas. Now, hot
plugcan be configured not to use such hacks.
Do you use logical interface for ifup?
can someone translate this for me?

The message should be reworded, but here's the gist.
Previously, hotplug did, e.g., "ifup eth0=hotplug" when eth0 appeared.
Now you can choose to have hotplug do "ifup eth0" instead.

Would you or someone who understands this issue suggest alternate text
to the maintainer? I think the current text is fairly confusing.

It was I who [1]asked for this "feature", but not as a low-priority
debconf question but as the default. The point is that you can get
your Cardbus and USB network interfaces configured automatically upon
insertion without having to put a special "mapping" stanza in
/etc/network/interfaces. But since it's not the default I will have to
make d-i write out this stanza anyway for Cardbus devices.

We shouldn't change the default because that would reopen bugs
like #143137. Since it doesn't satisfy the original wish, I'd say
that this "feature" should be removed.

Hmm... yeah, you're right. I thought the problems only had to do with
hotplug starting before modutils/discover.
I'm not sure how the best way to solve this would be, but I really
would like hotplug to be smarter about this so that you won't have to
define these mapping stanzas. The requirement to not have auto entries
for PCMCIA cards is also confusing, although it could be solved by
having cardmgr started earlier in the boot process. Oh well.

I don't find adding a short mapping stanza so burdensome. It would
be nice, however, if installation did it.

The name is indeed confusing. It should be called "up-at-boot"
or something along those lines.

Re: hotplug logical devices? |

I just installed hotplug 0.0.20040329-6 and I find that debconf
now asks the question "How to manage network interfaces with ifupdown?"
and gives three options:
all
auto
hotplug
The last one is the traditional "ifup eth0=hotplug" behavior.
The first one can be implemented using "=hotplug" and a mapping stanza
and so isn't required.
The second will cause hotplug to ifup all interfaces that are
marked "auto" in /etc/network/interfaces. But those are precisely
the interfaces that one does _not_ want hotplug to ifup! Interfaces
marked "auto" are ifup'ped at boot time by /etc/rcS.d/S40networking.
Someone is very confused here -- either the hotplug maintainer or me.
(Probably both.)

Yeah, I'm working on it. The problem with the mapping stanza is that
it's not needed with 16-bit cards, but it is with the Cardbus ones. So
you can run happily with the former without the mapping but if you
switch to Cardbus it doesn't work anymore. hotplug should probably
handle all these events and the ifup in /etc/pcmcia/network.opts
should be removed, but that would be problematic for people who
upgrade.

Agreed.

Yes, pcmcia-cs is another part of this mess.

I agree entirely.
