Hi,

I am attempting to install MCMS within Windows XP SP2 and associate the
MCMS templates within Visual Studio 2005. I can see MCMS templates
available when I select New / Website (not a problem), but I was told
that I should see a menu item called MCMS Template Explorer under the
View / Other Windows Menu... if everything is installed properly. I
have never seen this menu show up.

I have done, what I thought was the correct installation of MCMS but
apparently not.

Installation steps:

1. Installed SQL Server 2005
2. Installed Visual Studio 2005.
3. Installed MSDN Library...
4. Microsoft Update...
5. MCMS SP1a
6. MCMS SP2.
7. MCMS SP2 (Hotfix) -
 MicrosoftContentManagementServer2002SP2p
atch30.msp...
8. Copied projects from the MCMS C:\Program Files\Microsoft Content
Management Server\DevTools\NewProjectWizards80\Visu
al Web Developer
folders (CSharp / VisualBasic)
To: [where D: is my documents folder]
D:\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual Web Developer
(CSharp / VisualBasic respectively)
9. Copied from the MCMS C:\Program Files\Microsoft Content Management
Server\DevTools\NewItemWizards80\Visual Web Developer folders (CSharp /
VisualBasic)
To:
D:\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ItemTemplates\Visual Web Developer
(CSharp / VisualBasic respectively) [where D: is my documents folder]

What should I do from this point... I have seen/read quite a few
messages relating to this problem, but most of the messages refer to
the menu option [MCMS Template Explorer] off of View/Other Windows
being seen at one point, but I have never had it present at all...

Any help would be appreciated...

Hi Robert,

after copying the files did you run "devenv /setup" as outlined in the
readme file?

Cheers,
Stefan

Thanks Stefan,

Yes, I ran devenv /setup. The process took a couple of moments (about
45 seconds) and returned to a command prompt.

What process do you take in setup (top to bottom)...

Stefan,

First of all I want to say thank you very much for all of your help.

I had success with the patch installation, but came to one realization.
Before I explain I have to ask a couple of questions...

1=2E Did the patch relating to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=3D914195 "Template Explorer
Missing" only deal with Visual Studio 2003 and MCMS 2002 SP2 ? (I am
probing Microsoft for this answer too...)

2=2E After copying the templates to the appropriate Visual Studio 2005
folders within My Documents I ran "devenv /setup". I then opened Visual
Studio 2005, Selected File / New Project / Website and Selected a MCMS
Template. What I did from the beginning was "always" choose to create a
new website using the "File System" and not the "HTTP".
That is why I could not see the "MCMS_Template Explorer" menu option.
When I started choosing "HTTP" to create a new site I was able to
select "MCMS_Template Explorer" (or that is when it appeared). My first
instinct was to ask for help (search on the web / contact you etc...) I
did find a problem relating to "MCMS Template Explorer Missing" both in
your forum and Microsoft...

My guess is that I always had the ability to do this. Maybe the patch
was needed but that is why I ask the two questions above. I am
reverifying to see if the patch was needed from the beginning (in my
case).

Generally, I do create websites, in Visual Studio 2005, by selecting
the "File System" and working that way. I really never use "HTTP" since
Visual Studio 2005 has it's own little web server built in.

This may have been a learning curve issue... Most likely.

Isn't it always...

Hi Robert,

1) it is for VS.NET 2003 and VS.NET 2005 after SP2.

2) you are right: you need to use HTTP. Otherwise IIS is not involved and
the ISAPI filters from MCMS will not be loaded.
So only HTTP is support for MCMS.
The "mini" IIS in VS.NET is not a full IIS and is not sufficient for MCMS.

You cannot use with file system mode you have to use HTTP mode.

Cheers,
Stefan
