In case anyone has this same problem: It appears that an answer is to
add the "nut" user (the user corresponding to the ups software) to the
"dialout" group (which controls /dev/ttyS0 by default).
If there is a better solution or if this introduces problems, I would
appreciate hearing about it. Thanks!
