The only difficulty in doing this is getting the cable pinouts correct!
I've done it with multiple Sun systems. Linux with minicom work fine.
The same exact cable setup that you used for windows/hyperterm should
work equally well for linux/minicom. Assuming, of course, that you
have;
a - set the baudrate / serial port options in minicom
b - enabled a 'getty' process to listen to your serial port
