I've upgraded from sarge to etch, but have run into an unmet dependency
problem and now cannot do anything with apt-get.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kernel-image-2.4.27-3-586tsc: Depends: initrd-tools (>=0.1.48) but it is
not installable

When I do an apt-get -f install to fix dependencies, it wants to remove
the kernel, and or course that won't work.

I'm also having troubles with apache2, but can't do much if I can't use
apt-get.

Please help.

Does your web browser work?

Yes, then go to debian.org and search for-and download the file.

No, then 'man wget'. If you need the command I will google it for you.

Then install it using dpkg -i <packagename>

It looks like either stable (0.1.81.1) or unstable (0.1.84.1) should work.
Either that or just wait until it is fixed in etch's packages. It
shouldn't take more than a day or two.

I will say that-that is the exact reason I am running unstable right now.
I ran into several packages that etch didn't have, like k3b, and I'm not
the waiting type. Etch will get them though.

Thanks Steve,

I think I'll avoid doing any dist-upgrades in the future.  Apache broke as
well, and other errors with locales.

Did you get the kernel working?

Install 'apt-listbugs' for any future upgrades.

Run 'apt-cache search apt-listbugs'. It will save you a ton of problems.

You should upgrade to linux-image-486 or linux-image-686 when you
upgrade to Etch.  The kernel package is renamed from kernel-image to
linux-image, as there are more OS:es in Debian than just linux.

Also there is no more support for Linux 2.4 in Debian.  You should
upgrade to Linux kernel 2.6. With that you will have to drop hotplug,
but instead get udev etc.  This is good.

Yes, finally.  Ended up upgrading to sid though.  Apache is broken, but
I'm sure fixable.  And I had to mess around with amavisd-new to get
postfix mail working again.  I'm not sure it was worth the effort, now I'm
not confident that anything is stable anymore.
