Cakewalk is for audio production as what Phothoshop is for image
production.

We really need a good one.
Basically, we need something that can convert any format to any other
format regardless of platform.

Supposedly, midi was a standard at some time.  However, it could not
capture the vocal elements properly.  Wav was an imporvement but the
audio was a bit interupted.  MP3 really works but is not promoted too
much.  Converting files not on a cd to MP3 is difficult in a linux
application.

It this true?

It wasn't intended to do so.

No, it wasn't.  wav is the same as the audio format on a conventional
audio CD. Pretty damn good, unless you're into SACD or multichannel
audio like DTS.

You must be joking.  It's incredibly promoted.  How many bajillion mp3
players are out there right now?

Missed the beginning of this thread, but in answer to the query in the
Subject: line, check out Rosegarden, specifically version 4 (or later, if
such exists).  May not do *everything* you're looking for, but is a very
nice MIDI sequencer/editor, and can incorporate other types of audio file
formats as well.
