My coworker just gave me his used Snap Server 4000. I've connected it
to my home network and everything is working correctly, but it's asking
me for a user name & password to access the device (either to gain
access to the drives or for configuration).

He doesn't remember what users he created, nor does he remember the
main administrator login/password.

He also doesn't have the original software, and doesn't know if I had
it that it would help "reset" and enable me to have access to a
pristine system.

Looking on Adaptec's website was futile - they don't mention recovery
or reset at all.

HELP!

Oh, dear - you don't suppose that's why he gave it to you, do you?

Curiouser and curiouser.

And you yourself post from an anonymous email address. I wouldn't want
to jump to any conclusions, mind you, but I don't think I'll choose to
lend a hand, either.

To any HELPFUL people: I didn't use my REAL email address because I
didn't want to get spammed.

If you don't want to trust that I'm aboveboard - fine - keep your snide
and unhelpful comments to yourself, and then get your jollies (and a
life) elsewhere.

And you just have a generous but very forgetful friend who also can't
seem to keep track of the software needed to support his (now your)
hardware.

Not to mention choosing to use an anonymous email address even in the
private mail (not the same as your post above) which you just sent me.

That last would seem to suggest that you're (if nothing else...) a
pretty suspicious person yourself, so you really shouldn't be too
surprised when others aren't blindly trusting in the face of some
somewhat peculiar circumstances.

Do have a nice day, though.

Hey, Dingus: You are bound to get that reaction when walking in
here with a story like that

It's the same reaction you would get if you were a Licensed and
Insured Locksmith (meaning if you do something illegal, even if done
unintentionally because you were duped by the customer, you're on the
hook for it) and a stranger walked in off the street and refused to
give his name.

Said stranger asks you to give him the location where you drill to
crack and enter this Big Safe he has that "a friend gave him" - "the
friend" forgot the combination, can't find the paperwork that says how
to operate the lock or set a new combination, can't find the receipt
that proves proper ownership of the safe, and the mystery customer
only wants to know how to get it open.

He doesn't want you opening it up for him, because you might get a
look at what is inside after getting it open. And he sure the hell
doesn't want you getting a good look at the big stamped property tag
on the front (that they already tried chiseling off and painting over)
that says "Property of Wells Fargo Bank" - and it's NOT an antique...

C'Mon, look at it from Bill's point of view - doesn't that sound
just the slightest bit suspicious?

Yeah? Well - my "very forgetful" friend REMEMBERED, entered the
password, we got a new user set up, cleared out his old data, and now
it's MINE.

So you and every other distrustful puke out there can shove it.

You all must be really untrustworthy people - to see yourselves in
everyone else you come into contact with.

I'm afraid that you flatter yourself if you believe that anyone here
cares in the slightest what you may think.

Of course, your attitude isn't likely to get you help in the future,
here or elsewhere, even if you don't post anonymously - but that's your
problem, not anyone else's.

Congratulations. Nothing like a little incentive to shake loose a
fact from the old wetware.

No, that's an inaccurate blind swipe at people you don't know -
We're considered trusted by our friends and employers precisely
because we consider stuff like that in advance BEFORE we act, and
don't go "Oops" later.

(At least, not very often and not for huge values of Oops. Murphy's
Law and The Rule Of Unintended Consequences still applies.)

You may well have true and proper ownership of that Snap Server, but
you said nothing to convince us of it in the initial post, in fact the
tone implied otherwise. There are a lot of crooked people out there
who would steal the equipment out of the trash and try cracking it,
perhaps to mine for Identity Theft information, or Corporate Secrets
from a rival business...

That's why a Locksmith insists on ID before they pick a safe or a
car open for you, they have to know you are supposed to be inside that
item - if it turns out you weren't, they can be arrested as an
accessory to the original crime, and their only defense would be that
you proved ownership and managed to fool them with false paperwork.
