This is an occasional post to list the functions of the
newsanon.yi.org gateway.

The gateway is a standard gateway with an extended syntax.
Here's a list of the gateway's functions:
========
Standard
To: mail2news@newsanon.yi.org
Newsgroups: group1,group2, etc.
==========
X-Himmel directive (in the headers or body) (A)
This will allow you to use any exit remailer and still have full
'from' headers.
Example: x-himmel: joe blow <joeblow@abc.invalid>
This is a very useful feature. If you want to have a persona
with your anonymous posts, i.e., if you want a full 'from'
address, there are, as of this writing, only three remailers
that provide it, one of which, Panta, requires hashcash.
The other two are frell and hastio. One of them, I forget which,
contains a disclaimer. Or maybe it's both of them.
Using X-Himmel, you can forget about having to remember which
exit remailer does what, and just post the message.
==========
========
========
Used with no newsgroups header
Used this way, there cannot be another gateway coded. (A)
(1) To: some.newsgroup@newsanon.yi.org
This uses the 'from' header in your message.
(2) To: group1=group2=group3@newsanon.yi.org
up to 5 groups
(3) To: some.newsgroup_@newsanon.yi.org
This will create a random 'from' header. Note the underscore.
That is all that is needed or allowed.
Note also that the syntax is very simple; there is no need for
yyyymmdd, _nospam, or anything like that. Spammers do not see the
special format the gateway uses, so requiring a date is pointless.
In addition, the syntax gets so complicated, nobody will use it,
or, if they do, they are likely to make a typo.
==========
==========
Sending to private newsgroups. (B)
I'll use news.grc.com as an example
To: mail2news@newsanon.yi.org
Newsgroups: grc.test
x-newsserver: news.grc.com #news server name
x-newsauth: 12345678:12345678 #userid:password
Use x-newsauth if userid and password is required.
The x-news.... headers can also be put in the body of the message
if that is more convenient.
==========
==========
Sending to Email addresses
Simply replace the '@' with '^'
For example: joeblow^abc.invalid@newsanon.yi.org
==========
==========
(A) If you use this option, newsanon.yi.org must be the only
gateway used.
some.newsgroup@newsanon.yi.org is intended to let people post
quickly, with all information pointing back to them removed when
the post gets to the newsgroup.
They may post through a chain of remailers, giving them complete
anonymity, or may send the message unencrypted. If they use it
that way, the message-id will be that of their isp, so the gateway
protects their anonymity (at least in the newsgroup) by replacing
the message-id with one it creates.
In the case of the X-Himmel directive, the message-id of the exit
remailer is replaced so as not to let people think that the
message had any connection to that remailer. And the reason for
that is that the message has been changed (the 'from' header,
and maybe a few other things), and the exit remailer should not
be considered responsible for it.
*****In both cases, because the message-id has been changed, the
message will not be sent if other gateways are included in it,
since that would result in a duplicate message showing up in the
newsgroup.*****
(B) Based on my testing, private newsgroups seem a little
persnickety, sometimes, in what they will accept for headers, but
I'm sure that you will have at least 98 percent success in using
this function of the gateway.
Please use it responsibly: the people hosting the private
newsgroups pay for them out of their own pockets and are targets
for any complaints.
If you have any questions or comments, please post them on
alt.privacy.anon-server.
