I know it's been asked but I can't find it.

What's the difference between CME and CM?

Thanks

Scott

CME runs on IOS and has a different web interface. Phones register to
the router in a way similar to the way they would in SRST, with
ephone-dns and ephone assignments. Its basically an SRST router on
steroids.

OK.... To make it a little more direct.

I know it runs on the Router like SRST and I know it's for smaller
installs. I have only dealt with CM but I have a site that would like a
50 phone install and was wondering what I lost with CME over CM.

Scott, don't think of CME as a subset of CM it is, in fact, a different prod
uct who's features' intersect with CM. If you want to know what features you
have, you can read the docs here . If the chance is high you can bring them
into your centralized deployment, you run the risk of removing features if
you have deployed them on CME. I know that wouldn't fly well over here so we
waited until a central deployment with SRST was possible.

You lose flexibility, some ease of management, and the
ability to support more than 240 phones.

CCME does *not* support MGCP like CCM - only SIP and
H.323. CCME, AFAIK, does not support background image
displays on 41/61 phones. CCME also has a limit on
the number of ring tones you can make simutaneously
available. CCME does not support barge, cBarge,
attendant console, and many other available features
of CCM. There are also no calling search spaces or
partitions although there is 'class of restrictions'
in place of those.

If you really want to see *ALL* the differences, I
highly suggest you pick up the IPTX book and the CCM
books and compare features.

Paul

Thought I throw in a plug for CME.

CME runs on a router that runs IOS, typically these days that's an ISR route
r. These routers are inexpensive and have lots of connectivity options with
a large choice of WIC, VIC, NM, and other card form factors. CME has a compa
nion product called Unity E
xpress which gets you voice mail either on flash (AIM-CUE) or on a hard disk
(NM-CUE). You can use the same 79xx phones as CM and if necessary you could
also use regular analog phones. The phone system is a large number of featu
res, but not a large as CM,
however there are a few features that CME has that CM doesn't. You get analo
g, SIP, and H.323 connectivity. CME has a pretty nice basic automated attend
ant system and call distribution capabilities.

If you have a small 10-150 phone office you can make a nice ISR system that
has data, voice, and voice-mail all on a single router, at a very low cost.
For example at 2821 or 2851 ISR with AIM-CUE for smaller sites or a 3825/384
5 with NM-CUE for larger si
tes.

I think CME is under appreciated. cisco doesn't seem to push it.

Best,

leb
