Final Work Around:
The catalog gets corrupted when too many files are moved in or out of the
directory tree at one time.  Solution is to PAUSE THE CATALOG (not the
service), manipulate the files, then START THE CATALOG which will perform an
incremental scan.

It is also possible to write scritps to backup and restore a paused catalog.
That way very large catalogs can be retored without a long wait for
reindexing.
