If you are using Gnome, you can add startup programs here:
Desktop Preferences/ Advanced/ Sessions/ Startup Programs. The desktop
preferences are in the 'gnome-control-center'.
If you are using KDE, you can create shortcuts to your startup programs
in ~/.kde/Autostart .
If you are using IceWM, you can create a shell script named
~/.icewm/startup with startup commands in it. Read
/usr/share/doc/icewm-common/html/icewm-3.html#ss3.3 for the details.
Other WMs will have other ways to specify startup scripts. Good luck.
