Hi

Where could I find documentation or cases - "How to migrate MCMS 2002 to
SharePoint Server 2007". My solution have custom controls made by some MCMS
developers + Telerik mcms controls. I'm affraid that new install of
SharePoint Server could destroy previous CMS. What is the best approach?
The second question is about licences. I have MCMS 2002 Standard Edition
with limits of users - 15 and possibility to work with one domain.
I also have sharepoint 2003 licence. Due to the fact I have SA licences what
enables me to upgrade products to the newest ones. The question is:
If new SharePoint Server 2007 (and built-in CMS module) have the same limits
like MCMS Standard (one domain + 15 users only)?

Best Regards

Dariusz Tomon

Hi Dariusz.

Currently the authorative details on this topic can be found at:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/office/aa905505.aspx

In a nutshell, this is a *migration* rather than an upgrade, and is
essentially a three step process:
1. anaylse existing solution, and determine if "refactoring" is required.
2. migrate data into MOSS using the built in capability - this punts over
the data with "White Master Pages" which have no branding/layout etc.
3. re-implement custom MCMS code using MOSS features or new custom code.
Plus implement Master Pages and Page Layouts to replicate your existing MCMS
templates.

3 is important because the PAPI, which your MCMS developers would have used
to create custom controls no longer exists.
This code needs replaced with OOTB stuff (e.g. Navigation controls - very
easy) or new controls (e.g. custom placeholder - a little more work but not
hard.) If you have code behind in your templates which uses PAPI this also
needs to be replaced - generally things like meta tags and so forth are easy
to deal with using the new MOSS controls.

You should run the CMS Assessment tool (available at the above link) first -
this will identify which PAPI classes are being used.
Also check out

for data migration common issues, such as duplicate item names.

For more details check out:

With respect to telerik, they have also made available Telerik Rad Editor
for MOSS at www.sharepointcontrols.com

With respect to MCMS Standard Edition, there is presently no similar edition
of MOSS, and if you are intending to deploy an Internet facing site, you
will require the MOSS for Internet Sites SKU. I am not a licencing
specialist and would strongly urge you to speak to your MSFT Account Manager
for more information.
