Hi Fritz,

I was hoping that arguments would not occur with my questions, seems
to have started another war but in the previous thread. So I am
starting another thread. I have a pgp key if you have one, then we
could go private in another group?

I could not get Tor to install on its own, so I found and downloaded
vidalia-bundle-0.1.1.26-0.0.7.exe and installed Tor that way. It also
installed the other two as well.

And then I followed the instructions at
http://tor.eff.org/docs/tor-doc-win32.html.en (this page was easy to
understand)

I use Opera and the web page only had pictures of FireFox, I like
Opera better because it is heaps sexier. Opera does not have a Socks
host line or buttons for Socks v4 and v5 like FireFox has? So I could
not put port9050 anywhere?

I did the test at
http://lefkada.eecs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/ipaddr.pl?tor=1 and got "You
connected to this site from 66.254.102.58, hostname , which is NOT a
valid Tor exit node.", this is not my isp IP but. I turned the proxy
settings off in Opera and did the test again and got the same thing
with my real IP address. So does that mean Tor is actually working
with Opera? I have not touched Privoxy, which has had "Mar 24 20:06:33
Privoxy(00000768) Info: loading configuration file 'config.txt':" in
its window forever and has not changed. I have got the little green
onion and a blue circle with a white P inside.

And my firewall asked to allow Tor using port 8080 and I said yes, I
thought Tor was supposed to use port 8118 and 9050? And is pages
encrypted when I am using Tor?

And I am having trouble with quicksilver because I do not know which
program to install, I read somewhere that it was important to use the
right one (I think i did), I have QS1.2.5.exe and QS1.2.6b2.exe,
assuming I should use QS? I went to
http://www.panta-rhei.eu.org/pantaw...mousNewsPosting and the
page is like really old and the links to Socks do not get me anywhere
that I can understand, and this page is heaps hard to understand, I
wish it had like lots of pictures. I would like to get SocksChain and
the crack from that page, but the link does not get it for me, I think
I need that yes? I now think that maybe Socks and SocksChain are two
different programs?

Can you tell me what I should install next and if Tor is working ok
for Opera? And I can use the same Tor for newsgroups?

Thanks

Temp

Tor is supposed to be installed with vidalia, otherwise it becomes
very difficult to set up.

Of course you can use Opera! The web page just used Firefox as an
example as it was free and open source.

No, Opera does not support Socks. Most browsers don't actually,
Firefox is just an exception to that rule. However, this is where that
Privoxy program comes in that should be sitting in your tray..

Privoxy converts http proxy requests to socks4a requests through tor.
So all you have to do is tell Opera to use 127.0.0.1 on port 8118 as
your http proxy and it should be clean sailing. 127.0.0.1 is your
local IP btw, it's not a server on the internet it's just your computer.

Also make sure you tell Opera to use that http proxy as the proxy for
all the protocols. So set it for HTTPS, FTP, Gopher, etc. That way
everything goes through it.

> I have got the little green onion and a blue circle with a white P inside.

When Privoxy is used, that blue circle turns into a green circle.
That's how you can tell. A blue circle means it's not being used.

Tor by default listens on port 9050. Privoxy listens on port 8118.
Maybe Vidalia listens on 8080, not sure.

Yes, if you are actually connecting through Tor then everything that
goes through it is encrypted from your computer right up to the very
last tor node used in the chain.

I can't really help with this question as I don't use QS, but you
shouldn't need to use Socks at all with it. QS provides anonymity
without needing Tor. Telling it to use Tor as well just adds an extra
layer that really isn't needed. Once you are more comfortable with QS
on it's own you can then start to try and work it through Tor as well
if you really want, but don't worry about that to start with. QS
actually provides more anonymity for mail and usenet posts than Tor
does due to it's low latency.

> Can you tell me what I should install next and if Tor is working ok

Opera will work through Tor when you tell it to use Privoxy. 127.0.0.1
on port 8118.

You can tell your news reader to use Tor for newsgroups, but to be
honest you'll get better anonymity for newsgroup posting by using QS
or JBN2.

Hi Anonymous,

Now i understand why what i thought were the same people sounded
different, so other posts from Anonymous might not be you?

I got quicksilver to work, but I had to let it install mixmaster and
then I sent a message to alt.test and it got there from Anonymous via
Panta Rhei, thats like totally excellent :-), I feel that I am a
professional now, except I still not sure about it yet.

I use Agent for a newsreader and i like it because it is easy to use
now because i have been using it for ages.

I noticed the little privocy sign turn green when I click on a link in
Opera, but it goes to blue again in a few seconds, the Opera page
keeps loading for a bit but.

Do you know how can I send a reply to my alt.test post using
quicksilver?

And I can send attatchments yes?

Please read the quickstart. Ask your questions AFTER you read the
documentation.

There is an Opera browser that runs on USB with Tor already configured
on it, I tested it and it works out of the box.

It's not officially supported of course, search for "operator" like it
is, the URL is definitely somewhere in Opera newsgroups, or
http://www.scroogle.org

Hi again,

I have been trying to reply to some of my posts in alt.test, and
quicksilver says that they have gone. They did not get there but. So I
do not know what has happened?

I did read the Quickstart (I thought that was a webpage at first and
searched google for it before I realised, so I suppose that shows how
much help I need)

I tried one to here as well and the headers of the message before I
sent it are below. They are different because some how the message ID
has gone to the end of the reference when I copied and pasted?

And I could not get the empty space in front of the message ID in the
QuickSilver headers? I learnt that from I used the help file at
http://www.quicksilvermail.net/help@nym.alias.net.html

And I had to change my real email address for From:
sorryhadtoch@ngethis because I do not want to put my real email in.

And I did not know that QuickSilver and this newsgroup were related!

I do feel a bit confident that I can soon do this. :-)

From Temporary Temp
(this is just a temporary nik for now, pretty horrible I know, I will
think of something really good to use soon)
