The installation of Etch went very well. Had only one glitch -
configuring gtk2-engines-spherecrystal failed - but reinstalling
the desktop and base packages apparently did the trick. It even detected
and installed my printer. But one difference from Sarge leaves me with an
Aptitude config question - Etch did not prompt for CD vs net setup
during installation, and did not prompt for installing each CD.

Because of a winmodem and dialup connection, CDs are the only
practical solution. I can use jigdo to download the CDs from a DSL
connection, then install to this machine. The Etch install used only the
first disk (which eliminated the disk shuffle with Sarge), but left me
with only minimal applications. I'd like to install Open Office and some
other goodies that should be on the CDs. But since Etch didn't ask if I
wanted CD installs, I don't know if I need to tinker with the config
file. That's no problem, but I want to be sure before I really mess
things up.

You might want to take a look at a tool called apt-cdrom which helps
with adding lines to /etc/apt/sources.list

Yup! Try opening the terminal and type "apt-cdrom add" (without the
quotes).
When prompted, insert the Etch CDs. This will help the aptitude add
the Disc packages to the aptitude index.
Repeat this for each disc you have.
