I'm a newby who just installed Debian using netinst then
downloaded the standard and desktop packages. My console
display, a 1280X1024 LCD, runs Gnome at 640X480. In the
Gnome preferences for Screen Resolution only the value
"640X480" is offered. Ctl-Alt-kpMinus and Ctl-Alt-kpPlus
have no effect. I would have guessed that Xorg isn't
running except that Ctl-Alt-Backspace kills the graphics
and returns the screen to a command line.
I've tried changing /etc/X11/xorg.conf by removing
"800X600" and "640X480" from the 24-bit modes, depth 24
being the default, and rebooting, but that had no visible
effect.
The video card isn't. That is, the video adapter is built
into the motherboard. The system is a Compaq toaster, for
which I have no motherboard documentation, but it's less
than two years old. It ought to support VESA at 1024X768
at least.
Can someone advise me where in the (surprisingly light)
Debian documentation I might find a discussion on enabling
better screen resolution?
Thanks for your attention.
