Hi,

I need to back up 65 laptops. They are all over the world. The company I
work for does not and would not like to have a Windows Domain server as
we use Open Source servers. They will consider Windows if I propose a
justified solutio
1) I want the laptops to have Backup clients on them
2) Continuous data protection would be a huge PLUS
3) Transmission is crypted
4) transmission when network is detected.


For the moment there are 2 backup solution that seems OK. Atempo and
Veritas Backup exec with DLO.  Problem with Atempo is that it requires a
SQL 2000 server which means not only a License for each Atempo client
but also a windows plus SQL CAL. Here we talking 95€ per laptop :-(
Backup exec requires a Windows server. However does it really require a
domain server??

Atempo seems to have better options but Veritas seems cheaper to own.
Ideal would be a Linux solution like Bacuala for Windows but there is
not client so that the client can run a backup
Otherwise any of you people out there have anything better to propose??
Preferably  easy to use, deploy and not to expensive

Are the backups to be done locally to USB drives?

Use image based, not file based, backup programs.

Solutions may be:

Buy 65+ licenses for Acronis True Image.
Make each system multiboot with Linux, and use a Linux backup program.

Note that I just started playing with Linux (Ubuntu) and have not yet tried
any Linux backup, but some folkes have said good things about PartImage. and
Mondo Rescue. Eventually, i expect to look at both.
