Hi all!

few days ago I installed Etch on my computer and am now stuck with the
DVD writer. The installer had no issue booting from the drive and do the
installation. But the installed system no longer detects that a DVD
drive is there.

The DVD is a SATA drive from LG, connected to a JMicron SATA/IDE JMB 363
(according mainboard manual) controller. I'm wondering that the Etch
installer was able to run this combination, whereas the Etch
installation does not...

Searching the net about that issue I'm even more wondering that the
installation worked, after I read that support for the JMicron
controller was introduced with 2.6.19. Don't get me wrong, I'm not
complaining that the installation worked that smoothly... :-)

Booting Knoppix 5.2 live CD works well, with the DVD being fine... but
that's based on 2.6.19 anyway...

Changing BIOS settings for the JMicron controller from IDE to AHCI
didn't made a difference.

Has anyone seen this before and ideas how to get Etch detect my DVD drive?

Thanks & best regards,
Manfred

Looks like a dvd rw drive WAS detected at ata2.00 assigned to sr0

That's Knoppix--not Etch.

Mr. Lutz, if you must, you can download 2.6.19 from kernel.org and build
it the old fashioned way.

First check out backports.org to see if they have a 2.6.19 kernel for Etch.

I hoped to get around that, since the Etch installer worked without
problems. Do you see any chance with the 2.6.18.4 kernel for this setup?

Cheers,
Manfred

Please ignore that one, just picked the latest available 2.6.21 kernel
on backports.org. That solved the problem.

Thanks for your help!

Cheer,
Manfred
