Recently I read an article involving the breakup of a child porno
ring based in the UK with tenticles in this country.

Honestly, I do not understand how it is that these people get
caught.  With chained remailers, ephemeral keys, Tor, and PGP, how do
these people get caught?  With use of the above, a picture leaving
your computer could be encrypted 24+ layers deep, what is it that
these people are doing or not doing that is leading th their capture?
Does anyone know?

Even chat rooms can be ported over Tor, right?  So, I just don't see
why it happens.

It all boils down to who they are.  They're malformed.  Regardless of the
tools at their disposal, they live in a world of delusion in which they are
"right" and their selfishness leads them to make stupid decisions.  They
don't believe they'll ever get caught just as much as they do believe that
they're normal.  Witness how they rationalize their perversion by calling
it "art" or that child molestation is OK because monkeys or primitive
societies do it.

They're XXXXed up and they will be caught because of how they are, not how
they do it.

I think it is mostly not the source that gets caught, like with drugs.
The ones who get caught are not security experts and can't afford to
hire them either. These are the users. We hear a lot about it, because
the 'authorities' want everyone to think progress is being made.

I don't think child porn is really a relevant thing in a privacy
newsgroup; privacy isn't about being able to break the law (or do shitty
things) without anyone knowing. What would be relevant is how things
like this are being used as an excuse to destroy privacy. The more this
is discussed in privacy fora, the more it becomes associated with
privacy wrongly.

There are many types of crime (possibly all of them) where privacy is an
element of not getting caught; why does this one come up so often in
comparison to the others? (ok I just notived the anon-server cross-post,
and maybe in that case the real-world ones could be discounted, but
still...)

They can't break the encryption. The people who were caught obviously
trusted the wrong people, let the wrong people in to their little group.

Because they don't use such things.  Read the articles.  The police
find the porno on their computers, so you know they aren't using
encryption.  They are traceable, and appear to know who each other
are, so they aren't using remailers or TOR.

The protection they do use is very limited apparently.  Kind of like
soap and water to wash off the AIDS virus.

Oh, and the guy using the remailer (Cyberiade.it Anonymous Remailer
<anonymous@remailer.cyberiade.it> ) is a notorious child pornographer.

He's got a great sense of humor, too.

The people getting caught pay for CP with credit cards, they think emptying 
the recycle bin deletes files, they think the computer repairman won't notic
e the picture & movies on their HD, etc....
