I have a Sipura SPA2000 which, after much trying and finally changing
my router, I have managed to get working and is brilliant.
I have need to buy another ATA - can anyone give me sensible and
objective opinions on what to get? Sipura seem to do the job but are
relatively expensive (I got mine of eBay.) The Linksys PAP2 seems to
be well priced but is it any good? Any other makes?
TIA.

The PAP2 is excellent, after all it's a Sipura in Linksys clothing. Both
now being the same company too.

However, don't get your PAP2 off Ebay, it could have been previously
locked to Vonage box.
SPA1001 gives two voip lines terminating to one handset. So, if you
don't want to have 2 separate phones but want to incoming numbers then
you might go for that.

I'm interested in the same question... also, is it worthwhile buying
combined ATA and wireless router boxes (if so, which ones?), or is it more
cost effective to take a router with QoS (which?) and add a separate ATA?
Thanks

If you want an all-in-one box, consider the AVM Fritz!Box range -

There's a reliable guy on there and is indeed selling the generic
non-Vonage locked devices, and they can be updated with later firmware no
problem.
When I bought my PAP2 it was from Broadbandbuyer, but I'd be more than
happy buying from the guy on eBay, several people have and had no problems.
You do however have to watch out for Vonage ones that were unlocked.

Thanks. Hmm... they look expensive, given it won't be very heavily used.
To get WLAN+router+VoIP I'd be looking at the top of the range models, which
are 100-120quid. It also seems to be difficult to find any for cable (are
there ADSL routers which can use an ethernet port as WAN instead? Some use
VLANs internally, so it might be possible)
Whereas a wireless router is 20-40 quid, and an ATA 20-40 quid. It's the
QoS bit that's missing. Can QoS be implemented easily with one of these
reflash-with-Linux routers? I need a fairly out-of-the-box solution (a bit
of initial fiddling is OK) as if it doesn't work I'll be a long way away and
won't be able to talk anyone through setting it up (a hidden pitfall of
VoIP!)

Yes you can use one of the Ethernet ports on say the 7050 as a WLAN port
to connect to a cable modem.
The QoS works very well, I don't notice any problem with call quality when
downloading, which is often the case with ATA's. The Fritz range are
*very* out-of-the-box, plug in, run the config wizard and away you go.

LINKSYS SIP VOIP PHONE ADAPTER PAP2-NA STAY UNLOCKED
I got the above PAP2 of Ebay from billionax and I have updated to latest
firmware.
No problems at all apart from the first one would not boot but he replaced
it.
I have not done a factory reset so thats the only thing I would worry about
now.
I did update the firmware off line and made sure Provision Enable: = NO
before allowing it back on the net.

Interesting, thanks.
I seem to have found some hardware which will do all the functions I want,
at a not-so-silly price. It's the D-Link DVG-G1402S which is VoIP+cable
router+WiFi for 60 quid. Has anyone experience of using it for VoIP? It
seems the manual completely ignores VoIP which isn't a good start.
Cheers,
Theo
