If you can stand the down-time, I would go for an image backup. You
have the greatest chance for a successful restore.
There are free linux-based rescue "live cd"'s that you can get which can
backup your partitions as an image. but you have to be familiar with
linux commands to backup to any device.
it is possible that Ghost or Symantec Backup is bootable, but I
seriously doubt it contains enough OS to burn a DVD.
then there's Start|All programs|Acessories|System tools|Backup (aka
NTBackup) which backs up to any drive or tape device (haven't tried
DVD's or blu-ray). if your system dies, restore is possible if you
reinstall the OS and restore from tape, then reboot. but it's probably
not going to be pretty due to service pack & hotfix differences. Tried
it once with the system state. NTBackup is not an entirely complete
backup. about 99% of files are backed up.
you are better off doing an image backup if you can.
maybe try http://www.drive-image.com/
it can backup to network, but may require a dual-boot machine. <$50

RAM Disk is *not* an installation method.
