I thought when you delete a resource, the link is automatically removed. No
404s.

Create a posting, link a resource item. Publish it. Then delete the
resource out of the gallery. Link is still there and when I click on it, I
get challenged to authenticate, not from CMS, but from some other source.

Hi Punisher,

your assumption was wrong.
The link will stay there. And the image will also remain in the database in
the so called "Archive Folder" where only MCMS administrators have access
to.
Btw: regular authors will no longer be able to save the posting till the
link is removed.

You should never let this situation happen!

Cheers,
Stefan
