Is it advisable to back up ALL the contents of my computer (ie.
programmes, register, settings etc, etc, etc) onto a separate hard drive, in
case of a complete computer breakdown.
If so---how do I do it please?
Norman

You need to do a `drive image` to a different hard drive.
This can be achieved with an excellent bit of software called
Acronis True Image...
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputin...mage/index.html

I use it myself, and so do lots of other people.
One day it`ll save you lots of heartache.

I use True Image since a couple of years, but luckly never needed to
restore the backup.

Because I am a bit skeptical, I ask: Is anyone here in this forum, who
ever restored the True Image File COMPLETELY (I mean the entire hard
disc) successfully?

I use TI 8 to clone a BU to my 2nd drive on a regular basis.
That means I can unplug/replug between drives, just by pulling/
pushing on the cables.
In other words, out of trouble, in just a few minutes.

When you create an image, Always take the time to verify
that image (it`s worth it !)

Unfortunately there are many tales, specific to True Image, of images
which have been verified but have not 'restored'. Nevertheless, as
you say, images should be verified despite there being no guarantees.

Yes. Many, many, dozens of times. I've even restored to different
hardware using the Universal restore feature. It practically always
works flawlessly.

I am, however, having a performance issue with a older Mylex 172 Raid
array. It works, only much slower than it should.

I also have a particular machine that every once in a while the
restore fails. Then when I try it again it works. But I'm more
suspicious of the HDD than Acronis there.

Yes, often. My only query is that sometimes it seemed that I used to
find material (e.g., short cuts) from the installation which the restore
was replacing. So I took to formatting the drive first, which I probably
ought to have anyhow.

Remember to check the image when you make it, as previously mentioned.
Also, making a bootable DOS USB stick will help, as you can check the
disc before and after. WTH, make Windows PE disc/USB stick, or the UBCD
windows variant, and put the Acronis plugin on it when you make it. (I
can't speak for Vista users; Windows Vista is a complete deal breaker
for me. Next stop Linux.)

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, better than being in charge.
