Hi, my name is Jeff and I am the CEO of a relatively new company
called Universe Point. I know that it's not common for company CEO's
to branch out on these levels but I want to reach out to some techs.

Here's the deal. We have developed a new backup software that has a
couple of new twists to it. It's built for the small and medium
businesses that cannot afford a full-time technician or want the extra
level of security and peace of mind that we can provide. It's also
built for IT guys, just like me, that want to save their clients time
and money and like the design that we've created.

If you would like to check it out go to http://www.UniversePoint.com

You can also contact me if you would like. I'd be happy to hear
anything that you have to say, good or bad. We also have a very
exciting reseller and partnership program that we're about to unveil.
You should contact me if you're interested.

Cheers,

Jeff Snader
CEO
Universe Point

Me, too! ;)

Where can I get the code?
Does it run on Win32, Mac, Linux, Unix, ... ?
Do you want money for the software or for the support?

It runs only on Windows. There is a cost for the software and the
monitoring service if you choose to use it. You can get a free trial
though if you'd like to test it out.

Products like yours are the reason why I develop my own GPLv3 licensed
backup software.

Christian,

I'm curious why you say that. Is it because you feel developing your
own is cheaper? Is it because you run on Unix?

Please expound.

No not this.

This day it is bad developing if a software doesn't run on all
plattforms. It is quite easy to develop plattform independent software.

A software that is security relavant (like a backup software) should be
open source to check the source what it does with my data!

The next thing is that if something is missing in a os-software I can
add it. If I miss something in your software, I have to ask and hope
that you would implement it.

Those are all good points. Our primary focus is on small and medium
businesses that are running Windows and do not have a tech, like
yourself, interested in looking at source code. That it why ION is
built the way it is. We want to be very focused on what we're
providing and who we're providing it to. I really appreciate your
insight though.

Question: How do you know if a backup failed?

Ah! But I want to show that it is possible to develop os-software for
low-level-users (I don't know the english word; in german we say
"WinDAU" = "siliest known windows user").

It is possible to create easy to use software. A user don't need to view
or modify the sources, but he is able to add bugs and feauter requests,
too! In an Open Source project is each little user a part of the
development process!

View the source! ;) (<www.blackfisk.org> but wait some weeks, it is not
online yet)

Christian,

I do understand where you're coming from. Our customers enjoy the
security of knowing that they have a professional company supporting
them and working on their software. That's what they're paying for.
If they use a backup product like yours they'll still be paying, but
it will be in development costs instead of software costs.

Also, on the multi-platform note. We're not trying to be everything
for everyone. We are trying to be the best solution for small and
medium businesses running on Windows Platforms. It's very important
to stay focused on who you are delivering your product to and what you
can do for them. Bottom line is, for our customers, we can save them
time and money because there are spending so much on just maintaining
their data backup.

Please keep me posted on your product though. Whenever I encounter
someone that is looking for a Linux, Unix, etc. or an open-source
solution I will send them your way.

Closed software is not secure! You have to open the code to make it
secure. And there is a high need for backup software to be secure.
