Grrrr... finally I've found the problem.

<Quote>
If Indexing Service is not on the Web Service Extensions list and allowed,
then you need to go
back to Windows Components installation and install it, even though you know
it is already installed. You have to get it into the windows metabase for
IIS properly. <>

I kept asking in the newsgoup whether the indexing service should appear in
the IIS management console under Web Service Extns because I didn't have it
and I got no responses.

The indexing.mmc was in Admin Tools and operational so I just asumed that it
was an installed Windows component. Can you believe that it was not
installed??

Now my search component works!

Well, a newsgroup is a "noisy" medium, and it is a difficult process to
recognize the "real" question, and also, to recognize the "real" answer. Yo
u
saw the "answer" in my reply to another thread, but Hari had given you the
essential info in your thread just before I first replied. However, since i
t
was the second time he had said it that day, he did not include the "how to
fix it" part. I amplified the answer because I had not recognized it as the
solution to one of my problems, but the essential grain came from Hari. It
is hard to put oneself into the questioner's "frame of mind" when you are an
expert and are not having the particular problem--which is why I work the
FrontPage Extensions newsgroup--its still a mystery for me and I struggle
with it just as everyone else does.

Please don't miss-understand, I appreciate all the help and it finally got
fixed.

I was just frustrated that it was something so odd (indexing was there and
operational but it wasn't an installed Windows component????).

Thanks again
