I am running Windows 2003 Server IIS. I used the Manage My Server wizard to
add the Mail Server Role.

I have the domain "yunes.us". "yunes.us" doesn't point directly to my
server's IP, but "mail.yunes.us" points directly to my server via
"yunes.dyndns.org". (I understand this setting won't let me send mail to
some mail providers, but that's not the problem.)

The first thing I did to get it working was permit anonymous access to the
Default SMTP Virtual Server. Everything worked fine, except that my mail
server was on the internet and relaying junk mail. So, I added Integrated
Windows Authentication to the authentication types, and changed relay
restrictions back to Only the (empty) list below, and kept the box allowing
authenticated computers to relay. I kept anonymous access allowed for
authentication types so mail providers like Yahoo! could send mail destined
for "yunes.us" (but now cannot relay).

Now, after these few checkbox clicks, inbound mail destined for "yunes.us"
reaches the server (the smtp connection is successful), but the the
postmaster (jeff-srv, the name of the computer) returns it to Yahoo!, saying
only that the mail couldn't be delivered. No mail ends up in any folders of
mailroot.

I stopped the server, and created a new virtual server with exactly the same
security stats. The only difference I can see is the first default smtp
server has the domain jeff-srv as the default, and yunes.us as the local
custom domain. The new server has the default as "yunes.us" (because it
asked). Messages are delivered to the drop directory when the new smtp
server is started, but the pop service doesn't distribute it to the
different mailboxes.

There doesn't seam to be a newsgroup for this, and I didn't find any info on
the net, so...

I wrote a rtf in WordPad. Opened a picture with paint. Copied a small part
of the picture, pasted it in the rtf, saved the document, closed it,
reopened it, and poof! everything following the picture was deleted. None of
the deleted text was found in the raw text. I was able to reproduce this on
different machines running different OS's.

Actually it didn't work. It suggested deleting the domain and recreate it
with the pop service manager, but the pop service manager apparently only
creates domains and mailboxes for the default smtp service, which is broken
on mine. So both questions still stand.

What it implicity tell you, is that what you have done will never work. You
cannot create it using the SMTP snap-in.

What do you mean by that the default SMTP service is broken? Why not fix it?
Have you checked the eventlog for messages related to this?

You're telling me my mail server will never work? Oy, that's not good.

My default SMTP service is broken. After it receives an email destined for
its domain, it sends it back saying only that it could not be delivered. The
SMTP connection log is below. This is the problem I'm trying to fix.

One workaround I tried was to create a new smtp virtual server. It was
working, but since I couldn't create a domain for it using the pop service
manager, all messages were forever destined for the drop box.

All I wanted to do was have a simple mail server with nothing extra. I
didn't want people relaying my junk mail from my server, so I added
authenticity (one checkbox). 2003 is freshly installed with all the updates
on a new machine, and shouldn't have any problem doing this.

I'm saying that it will never work when you create a domain in the SMTP
snap-in. It is by design, and it is a fact.

The problem we need to fix is why it is not working with the default domain,
the one created by the POP3 console.

The email you get back, what exactly does it tell you?
Do you find the emails anywhere on your server?
Do you have anything related to this in the EventLog (you can open the
eventlog by doing this: Start->Run, type eventvwr.msc )

Have you tried to delete it from the POP3 console, recreate it, and the
recycle the SMTP service?

I have reproduced the behavior here, but i have not yet found a solution.
(i'm a bit limited in resources and time right now)

Have you tried to reinstall the email server role?

Did you by any chance rename the smtp virtual server? (the one that was
created by the POP3 console) That seems to give the very same problem, and
renaming it back does not fix it. This should in general be fixed by
dropping the domain, and recreate it, but it does not.

I'm sorry to say that i do not have a solution for you.
