Hello all,
We are having a discussion about why is a Windows platform better than a
Linux platform when it comes to CallManager, or is Linux better than
Windows? In your opinions, is it better to go from 4.x to 6.x or wait
for 7.x to roll out next summer? Or is it better to stay on the 4.x
train? How many of you have switched to the Linux platform from the
Windows platform?

In Windows you have root access, which I really miss. Watching tac try totyp
e a long SQL select statement from a command line is pretty funny as itusual
ly takes several tries to get it right. I'd rather have log files in \var\lo
gs then in RTMT. Trying to edit text files like RingList.xml takes more step
s.
I was more concerned that cisco kept shipping Windows 2000/SQL 2000 so long
after Microsoft stopped supporting them andput it on extended maintenance.
Cisco is going to have a lot of old Windows 2000 boxes for years to come. I
t was liking buying a new PC in 2007and getting Windows 95.
Nothing wrong with 5.x/6.x, they have some great features but I do wish Cisc
o could release the same versionnumbers in Linix\Windows 2003 at the same ti
me.

I think the windows version is better because it does not lock you out of
the system like the Linux version. you have more control.

All,
I've found both the windows and linux versions to be quite stable.
I haven't been locked out of the linux platform...so I can't speak to
that, but I do like the method of patching on linux. Seems much cleaner
to me. (Plus the ability to roll back from a patch).
(I'm also an avid *nix user)

Both have good and bad.
linux version is nice with the dual partitions for upgrading and backing out
.
Windows has a little easier access to the DB. As far as being locked
out....... I think some of it is just a readjustement to new ways of
getting to the same data.
personally I run CM 4.1.3 but just did a install of 5.1.2 for one of
my School districts. Since I'm so late in the game right now I'm
waiting for 6.1 in January to start shipping and will most likely
upgrade to 6.1 just so I don't have to turn around and do a second
major upgrade.
With all that said...... at Open Mic tomorrow I'm going to ask to make
SFTP optional rather then mandatory. there is no reason why a server
on the same network needs to be SFTP for a stupid backup. If a Hack
wanted my backup file he can have it ;-)
just my 2 cents.

Well you can't get access to the OS like you can with the Windows version. I
would call that being locked out.
