I'm sorry if this is in the wrong post but I believe Ubuntu uses
Debian.
I'm considering switching from SUSE to Ubuntu Server. I don't seem to
be able to find a definitive list of what is available in server and
what I'd have to add. I'm interested in; mdadm, apache and samba.

Ubuntu is based on Debian.

Debian includes more than 20,000 packages. As far as I know they are all
available in Ubuntu, though you might have to add to the sources.list.

Those are all available in Debian and Ubuntu (as is just about any other
Free Software you could conceivably need).

Yes, Ubuntu is based on Debian, but why not try alt.os.linux.ubuntu?

Since you're in here, have you considered Debian? Etch has an install
routine that makes it a doddle to set up servers of the kinds you list.

You may need to refresh your newsgroups list.
If your ISP doesn't carry it, you should know that most of the free news
servers do.
I'll warn you, though, it's hell in there.

OK - to answer your original question - everything you listed should
certainly be in the repositories if not indluded by default in the
install. If necessary, it is quite trivial to add them after the fact.

On Sun, 11 Nov 2007, in the Usenet newsgroup alt.os.linux.debian, in article

Did you think to look at the ubuntu web site? Full Linux distributions
such as Debian, SUSE, or Ubuntu include virtually the same packages,
so "it's in there".

>I looked but it didn't show up on the list of available

You're posting from groups.google.com, and thankfully they haven't
included alt.os.linux.ubuntu in their lists - it's bad enough as it is.
Note that, because of substantial abuse from groups.google.com, many
people simply block all posts from that source. There are other, free
alternatives not as bad. Have you also checked your ISP's news server?
The 'alt.*' news hierarchy is carried at the whim of the local news
administrator. Thus, not all servers carry every group.
[compton ~]$ grep -c ^alt.os.linux .newsrc
46
[compton ~]$ grep ubuntu .newsrc
alt.os.linux.ubuntu
[compton ~]$
There are also web forums available if you like that format.

Only by paranoid types. Plenty of good help resources are not so stupid
as to filter googlegroups. Many people do not get nntp access from work
for one reason or other.

Well, lets list some:
aioe.org : also blocked by many paranoids and tin foil hat wearers

Nothing to do with paranoia, its a signal to noise ratio thing, stop
being so naive.

Your opinion doesn't matter, how about answering the OP instead of
wasting your time telling us all about it?

Many people shouldn't be reading/posting to Usenet from work for one
reason or another.
And stop being so rude, learn to snip.

I am far from naive. You are one of the paranoids. You have gone to the
dark side. As one of the "wintard" labellers your view holds no interest
for me. Adjust your beany .....

Who says? Who the hell do you think you are? They have lunch breaks.
They might need usenet access to help through a technical issue. WTF do
you mean they should not be accessing usenet!?!??!?!?! Often it is
simply and arsehole of a sysadmin. Often googlegroups is just the
quickest way since they dont remember their dedicated news servcie logon
parameters. Plenty of reasons.
