Contrary to what some people here seem to suggest (ehm) this is neither
a Ubuntu (do you call Microsoft if your phone isn't registering to a CCM
4.x?) nor an Asterisk issue as such.

However, cisco voice "professionals" (ehm again) should have noted
immediately, that the communicator is not exactly an "emulator" of the
7970, but a software phone application, so you probably (I'm like 99%
sure) can't download a phone firmware to it.

You should just go ahead and try it with a real phone instead, it's
guaranteed it will work. And you can even change the firmware back to
SCCP if the whole setup does not work out.

All that being said, this was still an off-topic request to this list.
For further help with Asterisk (even with cisco phones) I recommend you
asterisk-users@lists.digium.com (
http://lists.digium.com/mailman/listinfo/asterisk-users ). It's a very
helpful list and at least as active as cisco-voip. Also, a lot of
Asterisk users have cisco phones, so they will be probably quite able to
help you out.

Further resources:

Digium Knowledge base: http://kb.digium.com/

O'Reilly book is available as a pdf download, free of charge -
officially! -

)
and the bit more generic VoIP wiki: http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/

yes, all for free, tons of support. ehem.
