So, if I'm looking into purchasing backup software, do I really need
to care about the ability to burn CD's and DVD's?

Will this method be dead soon or is that a long time coming?

As backup, an extra hard disk, internal or external, are far superior, and
much easier to work with. But there may be good reasons other than backup,
especially as most modern machines make you create your own restore disk. It
is also a fairly good way to distribute a largish amount of data, though
flash drives are now so cheap, that they are quickly displacing this.

Others here may offer suggestions. I'd buy a hard disk for backup.

ION (found at www.UniversePoint.com) doesn't do CD or DVD burning but
it may be coming soon. I like the simplicity of using hard drives and
tapes are just way to much work.

I do like imaging software like Acronis but it can be such a hassle at
times.
