Here is a bit more about
Etaoin Shrdlu
Now in this post he actually admits
to being in Quebec. So it is definate
that he is NOT in Toronto but
is in Montreal.
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=E...177.135&rnum=91
Actually, no.
In Québec, we have the Civil Code, and with the rules it imposes,
they'd
be very hard-pressed to **PROVE** that I consented not to run a web
server, especially that the written contract I have in my possession
DOES
NOT prohibit it.
And like if they care, they're very happy to see my monthly $45.
I also found this intresting little tidbit where
he tries to explain as to why he has to
be a criminal and hide.
http://www.deaddrop.org/shrdlu.html
So why do I use a pseudonym (yes, it's true, it's not the name my
mother knows me by)? Glad you asked (else why are you here).
Originally, this page was just a compendium of entertaining places I'd
found "shrdlu" and a few notes about where it came from. Some joker
even linked to it with the explanation that it was a whole site
devoted to "Etaoin Shrdlu". Uh, nope. I'd put up the page because
there are quite a few folk too young to have ever heard of a linotype,
and even more who had no reason to be aware of it.
If all you're looking for is an explanation of what the heck a
"shrdlu" is, or why you should care, the old page is still here. I
renamed it after it was linked to at http://www.memepool.com/, since I
was not interested in getting the high volume of hits for such a
relatively unknown link. It is now
http://www.deaddrop.org/explains.html.
I use a pseudonym for multiple reasons. I have a real daytime job, and
I prefer that the two stay separate. It's truly anonymous, and doesn't
have any silly semantic attached to it (unlike, say, Quantum Zombie or
T. Rex). I used to be just shrdlu, but there are so MANY out there. I
added the Etaoin as a sort of honorific (and because I thought it
would be funny, and funny is always good). There are LOTS of "Etaoin
Shrdlu" types out there. Some of them are (or were) me. Some of them
aren't.

ETAOIN SHRDLU CMFGYP WBVKXJ QZ
A note of interest: July 3, 2001, is "Ghost In The Machine" Day
(GIMday). It is the day in the Luddite Calendar that celebrates the
potential for error that is innate in every machine, personified by
Etaoin Shrdlu. Shrdlu is the mistake with a name, the eponym of the
mistake in the machine.
Well, first of all, I use the handle because I always have (at least
since about 1979-1980). The original reason I used it was because it
was obscure, and in honor of an AI program (see below). When I
married, and changed my last name in 1991, I didn't worry that people
I knew on the net would not recognize me. Most of them never noticed
the name change, since my username didn't change.
The actual username has followed me from school to work, and from one
company to the next (and I've been at several). I even answer to it
anymore (it has been years, after all).
It has several meanings...
It is the second row of a very old teletype keyboard (etaoin being the
first six keys). These were patterned after linotypes (look up
typesetting if this is an unfamiliar concept). These keys are set up
in descending order of frequency of occurrence in the english language
(i.e. e is most common, and then t, and then a, etc). This is where
the actual sequence originates.
One of the best known uses is in the title of an old SF story, Etaoin
Shrdlu, by Frederic Brown, from the fifties.
It's also been seen as part of the comic strip, Peanuts. Charlie Brown
has said it when he's been frustrated.
It was the name of an AI program written in 1972. This program is also
known as "Blocks World," and was written by Terry Winograd as part of
his Master's Thesis. It was later published in a book called (if
memory serves) "On Natural Language Understanding." SHRDLU is quite
well known in the AI community, and is frequently referenced in other
areas.
Terry Winograd has a page about SHRDLU, himself, explaining how he
chose the name.
Shrdlu appears in various forms as the copy editor in the Computer
Underground Digest. I imagine that the reference here is to the old
linotype, and not to the AI program.
Etaoin Shrdlu also appears to have been the pseudonym of a columnist
for the Weekly Reader, a small paper directed at grade school
children, and popular in the fifties and sixties.
Another science fiction reference is in the novel "Four Day Planet and
Lone Star Planet," by H. Beam Piper. Etaoin shrdlu was a profanity
substitute used in the novel, which was written about '63 or '64 when
people still used substitutes.
So that begs the question well what kind of "daytime job" does this
guy have that he has to give false IDs to his ISP to try
and hide. What kind of criminal activities is this individual
involved in. Also noticed his email address of shrdlu@dropdead.org
Everyone else here has day jobs as well and no one else has
to use a false identity like him. Pretty much everyone here
has a day job and no one else has to hide like this individual
only reason some one would have to hide to the point which
Etaoin Shrdlu is if they are doing something illegal.
So what does Etaoin Shrdlu AKA Mark Defour have to hide.
Jamie

With all due respect, Geoff, he also wants people to think he is in
Totonto. That's not a good sign.

Give some thought to why he has to con others into hosting his site.
Why doesn't Etaoin just host his own site? What is he afraid of? He
said he hosted it at his above IP but *no one* could ever get to it
because it wasn't really there.
When it comes to truthfulness, Marc Dufour aka Etaoin Shrdlu is no
more or less believable than Jamie.
Most people come to NANAE to help stem the flow of spam. He comes
here for the
"etaointion" which he can't seem to survive without, which in turn
explains why he Jamie baits after promising not to. By his own
admission his sole purpose in life in to annoy people and he works
very hard at achieving his goal.

Probably one where he doesn't have the time to deal with Internet stalkers.

Hmmm curious. Not that I really care. Occasionally I find Etaoin
Shrdlu humorous. Although I do see why some people would plonk him.
How do we know that Etaoin Shrdlu is not a woman? Why else does a
person change their last name after getting married? Is it some French
Canadian thing?
Just thought I would add a little more to the confusion.
Test,
Lurking Luser

Actually, she is a woman (and the name is a "nickname" / handle).

So if I admit to being on Mars, does this mean I'm only subject to
Martian laws & courts?
