Hi,

I want the clarification for the following points

1.	One of our customer is having systems at mltiple locations.
2.	The systems run on various platforms in each of these locations.
3.	The data needs to brought to ODS area at the centralized office for
data warehousing
4.	Is it possible to use BizTalk server for performing the ETL
operation to bring the data to ODS from the different locations ?
5.	Can the ETL solution using BizTalk be feasible ?
Thanks in advance
Prem

Yes it is possible to have BizTalk do some parts of the ETL process (I've
done it to and from Oracle and legacy systems using flat-files) but if you
are using SQL Server 2000 as your data warehouse database, then using SQL
DTS is much simpler, faster and more robust.

Sure, BTS can be used to collect data for your operational data store, in
preparation for feeding your data warehouse.
BTS is not a good extractor, but it can host processes that perform the
extraction. It is great at translation. It can host hand-made processes
for loading.
BTS is good for cross-platform work, given the adapter architecture and the
availability of a large number of adapters.

BTS is OK for this, but not the best tool for this. BTS is better as a
messaging hub. There are a number of ETL tools that are cross-platform and
may serve you better, while remaining in the same price category. I'd
suggest you include this category of software in your selection process.

As stated BizTalk Server can perform those operations but it is a question
of details (volume, processing requirements, etc.). Very large, bulk
transformations and loads (think 10s of thousands to millions of records
per second) that don't require each transaction to be handled as a single
unit of work are not appropriate for BizTalk. DTS for SQL or other DTL
tools are designed for that purpose - jamming through bulk sets of records
where all or nothing success is ok. BizTalk excels at managing invididual
transactions that are part of inter-app/inter-org processes in scenarios
where transformation, routing, process management, compensating
transactions, auditing, etc. might be required.
