Hello, Michael,

I tried taking "NOSPAM" from your address to stalk you, but it
came back.

Anyway, here's your kind response to my post, with my replies
("TC:") inserted.
Basically, I couldn't find Drive Image 7.04 anywhere:

response 6-13-04:

Possible causes for a complex sector based image creation on DVD
are as
numerous as there are ppl with a last name like Williams in
London. People
think that imaging on DVD is as simple and something obvious like
writing
image on a HDD...well unfortunately it is not!

Unfortunately, I know nothing about your system, but let me work
through a
standard list of (initial) questions:

TC: Basics: it's a new (4/04) Dell Dimension 4600, P4/2.8GHz,
512GBRAM, WinXP with a CD/DVD ROM tray as well as the NEC
ND2100AD writer.

1. - Your 8 speed DVD writer (the NEC CD/DVD+RW ND2100AD); does
it truly
come with the latest firmware onboard? You may want to use Nero
Burning ROM
or similar software to find out the installed firmware version
(menu:
Recorder > Choose Recorder...) and compare it with the one that
is offered
bny the manufacturer.

TC: According to Nero, the Firmware version is 103D. I sure hope
it's up-to-date, being a brand new box ... I went to the NEC
site:

http://www.nectech.com/cdrom/index.htm

They only list three DVD RWs, including the 2500A, apparently
identical to the 2100A, except the 2500 can support -R and -RW
media. Firmware change apparently holds some promise for
upgrading a 2100A to 2500 capability. I searched Google for "NEC
CD/DVD+RW ND2100AD" and that got me to
http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=21903&start=0

from "The Dangerous Brothers":

"A Beta of the RPC1 and Rip Speed patch is available for the
ND-2100AD 103D. The flasher requires the use of Real DOS. Please
backup your current firmware before applying.

http://tdb.rpc1.org/firmware/103DRPC1.ZIP

Brother Vlad"

The posters who were interested in the Dangerous Bros. patch had
103D firmware and wanted extended "-" media burn capability.
Apparently, the "Rip Speed" aspect of the patch worked for some
posters, but one asked straight out (2/04):

"Does this 103DRPC1 firmware provided by you, The Dangerous
Brothers, unlock the Nec ND2100AD drive (103D firmware) so that
it can burn DVD-R media once it had been updated? If not, is
there any firmware available which could provide us with such a
result?

Thank you"

The Bros replied: "No & No"

So what does the patch do? Just change the "Rip Speed," I guess.

2. - Do you have the Nero InCD, Rosio Easy CD Creator's DirectCD,
Pinnacle
DVD authoring software that comes with emulation software, or
similar
software? Fact is that Gear has an issue supporting various
versions of the
disk format UDF.

TC: I'm not sure I'm clear on "emulation software" and its
ramifications vis a vis Gear and UDf, but I don't use any "drag
and drop" or "DLA" stuff to the writer, including Nero's.

Drive Image 7.04 (ask tech support for it) comes with a new set
of Gear drivers for your drive. Paying a visit to the Gear
website may also be a good thing to plan...

TC: I checked both Symantec and Gear and a "Drive Image 7.04"
wasn't listed anywhere, even in "Search." I checked the UK site,
thinking it was a US limitation. No mention of 7.04 anywhere.
Where did you hear of it? I submitted a query to Tech Support,
but ... well, "Tech Support" ...

3. - Do NOT use Quick Erase in Nero, use Full Erase. In case of
troubles use a lower Erase speed...

TC: Advice heeded. What about Quick Erase in other progs, like
the little Sonic "Record Now" utility that ships with Dell? I
noticed that at least one DVD+RW disk Quick Erased with Nero and
misbehaving, straightened up and functioned when Quick Erased
with Sonic.

4. - Make sure that Symantec software like NIS, NAV, Password
Manager, SystemWorks is temporarily disabled when planning an
image. Same applies actually to all resident software that may
interfere with the process of image writing...

TC: I just have Norton AV 2004 and the Internet Security Pack.
Running "msconfig" and "Startup," I've disabled all the
Quicktime, Musicmatch, Real, Sonic, etc etc multimedia grabbies
that want to quicklaunch themselves and hog cycles. Maybe I
should *enable* them all. I try to keep it as tidy as I can.

5. - Do NOT rely on cheap DVD disks...

TC: I've only used TDK, Maxell and mostly Memorex so far.

6. - In case of USB 2.0 drives that are connecting on a USB 1.1
machines it
may lead to problems as well. A notorious error is the
CORRUPTED_BUNDLE
(EA39070A) message.

TC: This is a new computer with (I hope) new USB spec, and an
*internal* ND2100AD drive, if you are referring to a possible USB
hook-up for some other, external variety.

7. - Go for Drive Image 7.04...

Tell me how and I'll sure try it. And, many, many thanks!

Travis

MY original post:

Hey folks,

I got Drive Image 7.01 and patched it to 7.03 (49MB?!) to insure
the best compliance with my new Dell's NEC CD/DVD+RW ND2100AD.
The closest their "Gear Pro" compliance list comes is a CD/DVD+RW
ND2100 -- and DI7 did recognize and write to the drive.

It was a 3-DVD job, and DI7 filled up one DVD+RW in about 14
minutes, then prompted me for a second disk and filled that in
about the same time.

Just when I expected to be prompted for the third disk, I got
"Cannot proceed, write protected or not formatted or something":
(error ea390007) I had to cancel. (The reason I use RWs is for
testing burns. This would have given me two coasters, and DVDs
aren't all *that* cheap just yet.)

A Nero6 examination of Disk 1 showed DI7 had written 4.3GB of a
4.4 total capacity (4,483MB new or erased). There were 282MB
available. Disk 2 had 4.5GB written, 0 bytes available! No wonder
it went down.

Any idea why DI7.03, apparently happy writing to the hardware,
suddenly decides to write every last byte on one disk and then
crash? These were both DVD+RWs that had been written to and
"Quick" erased in Nero. Did a bad erase screw with my test
strategy? (Nero can be very flaky.)

Any ideas greatly appreciated, especially if Michael Kimmer
happens on this. I'm a fan of your DI7 posts!

Best,

Travis
