Hi all,

We are looking to backup 3 windows boxes...

1 x Win 2003 SATA RAID box (Up to 8TB Storage) - OEM Solution
1 x Exchange 2000 (10GB DB)
1 x W2K DC (Active Directory) - Small AD DB!

We have a 48 backup window (with verification) to backup our current
3TB raw data, exchange and AD DB.

The two resellers, which for obvious reasons I will not quote have
come up with the following specs...

Reseller 1...

Overland NEO 4100 / LTO2 x2 / 60 data slots, & 1-slot mailbox
(£19,000)

CommVault Galaxy backup (£8,500)...

1 Universal Edition CommServe StorageManager for a Windows server.
1 MediaAgent for a Windows NT or 2000 server.
2 x Drive Management Software (priced per drive)
1 iDataAgent for an Active Directory Server.
1 iDataAgent (mailbox level) for an Exchange Server.
1 iDataAgent for Windows Server (NT, W2K, W2K3).
1 license for Open File Manager for Windows Server.

5 Days install & handover

Reseller 2...

ADIC Scalar 100 / LTO2 x2 /60 data slots & 12-slot mailbox. (£15,000)

NetWorker Server for W2K/NT, Includes 9 clients - (£11,000)
Auto Changer 1-60 Slots
NetWorker Module for Microsoft Exchange Server, Windows Client, Tier 2
NetWorker Open File Manager, 1 Client, Server, Windows and NetWare
Legato Media Kit

5 Days install & handover

-------------
Your comments, suggestions on the hardware, software and pricing would
be very much appreciated!

Thanks!

RL,

Nice solutions; however, keep in mind that the NEO and any other D2D backup
solutions just mask the fact that you're backing up to disk from the backup
software/backup server.

Backup Exec V8+ and Netbackup V3.2+ both allow direct D2D backups with all o
f the other benefits of tape backups (selectable time windows for backups, c
ataloging/selective restores, etc.). If you have an OEM storage array why n
ot look into purchasing another OEM 8 Tb+ backup box and point your backup s
oftware to the new storage server to create D2D backups?

However, I'd side with their 2XLTO-2 solution for offsite replicas but drop
the D2D backup appliances. With a small time investment in setting up backu
p-software native D2D you could easily save your company thousands of pounds
 vs. buying a NEO.

Finally, the storage industry is pulling the wool over our eyes with D2D bac
kups. This allows Overland and many other companies to take commodity ATA s
torage and mark it up 100%+ in cost through simple, usually Linux-based, sof
tware additions.
