    Preferred hard drive brand?

I've narrowed down my search for a SATA drive to the following:
(80GB, 7200rpm, 8MB cache serial-ATA)

Western Digital WD800JD
Samsung SP0812C
Seagate ST380023AS

Anyone recommend against a certain brand? I couldn't care about a 1%
performance increase/decrease, just reliability for my data. I've
heard that the Samsung drives have pretty good reliably for a relative
newcomer to the game too...

TIA everyone!
S.

Hi,

My experience with the Samsung Spinpoint drives (a 160GB) is only a
sample of one, but it ended up with a trashed (constant clicking)
unrecoverable drive after about 4 days of on-and-off use. Most of this
was imaging stuff from my old drive to the Samsung.

I've seen good reports from others on this same drive, so take this
report with a grain of salt. I was monitoring drive temps constantly
using SMART, and it didn't get overly high, so I was surprised by its
demise. The thing I liked about the Samsung (while it lasted) was that
it was very quiet.

On the other hand, I've since purchased two Seagate 80GB (IDE, not SATA)
drives, and had them for a couple of months now, with one of them on
24x7, and they're still both going strong. I'd say they are on par with
the Samsung noise-wise, maybe just a smidgen noisier, mostly some very
quiet clicking when seeking.

I haven't had any recent experience with WD drives.

Hope that helps.

Jim

You missed the best one:
WDC Raptor

How about the 30% performance increase the Raptor will give over the others.

WD Raptors are actually built on their enterprise 'chassis' and are very clo se to their SCSI cousins. Raptors are fast but we'd recommend seagate for r eliability.

You might want to take a look at Tom's Hardware-- they have a storage
section with many articles on S-ATA drives.
