I am running IIS 5.0 on a Windows 2000 machine.  I run my
company's help desk intranet site off of this same
machine, so the WWW part of IIS is working fine.  When I
attempt to start the Virtual SMTP server, it returns the
error "The service did not respond to the start / control
request in a timely fashion, please view the Windows Event
Viewer for more information"  The event log shows nothing
at the time of the error and nothing in the way of an
error that it is receiving at all.  I tried installing IIS
on a client system on our network and it starts the
Virtual SMTP server quite fine.  I checked in the Services
window and found that IIS Admin and SMTP are both running
and started automatically, so it is simply the Virtual
SMTP server that will not start.
