I want to have my portlet receive updates and then process the update and
send messages without any user interaction. The process is:

1. An external event occurs outside the portal
2. A portler receives notification of the event
3. The portlet processes the event
4. The portlet sends messages to other portlets.

Can anyone tell me if and how this can be done? How do automatic stock
tickers work in portal??

thanks

Stock tickers in the portal are not driven by external events. At a
specified interval the portlet goes out and retrieves new stock data.

Perhaps you can modify what you want to do to this paradigm?
