My mail server has a different ip address than my web page. Some SMTP hosts
are now bouncing my messages, complaining that the sender IP is "forged"
because the reverse lookup doesn't resolve properly. I asked my hosting
provider to create a PTR record in their DNS records, but either they didn't
do it or it didn't work. Was that the right thing to do? Can I do
something else? I have root priveleges. Any suggestions??

This most likely has to be done correctly by your DNS provider. What's
the IP of your mail server?
