Just recently my Windows 2000 server running IIS 5 has
stopped providing access through FrontPage to some
accounts. These accounts were able to log on and to work
with the webs they had authority to work with but now when
trying to log on the usename/password dialog just pops
right back up. This is not a problem with my
administrative account.

I am getting very mixed messages in my security log.
Sometimes I get login failed due to bad username/password
but immediately after get a successful login logged for
the very same username...often seems to happen if the user
tries more than once.

But other times I get a simple successful login
logged...but the user does not gain access to the web
through FrontPage...just keeps getting the
username/password dialog.

The only thing that has changed on this server is the
installation of the most recent security patches (July
14). I may try to uninstall the patches to see what
happens but want to see if anybody else has run into this
problem or knows of a fix or workaround first.

What version of FPSE are you using?

Have you verified that the user accounts in question still have appropriate
FPSE authoring permissions? (perhaps the user can authenticate successfully,
but their authoring permissions have been revoked somehow?)

Cheers
Ken

Thanks for your response.

I am using FPSE 2002, latest version (I reinstalled to
see if that would be a fix).

I have checked all the permission levels and they look
correct. Users given admin rights to the root web can
still work with sub webs. Users who are given admin or
adv author rights to a sub web are put in a sharepoint
group and that sharepoint group is given the appropriate
rights to files, folders and sub-folders but can't gain
access to them via FP.

The security log of the server shows the user as getting
successfully logged in but the username dialog keeps
coming up and when the user selects cancel a message
about web being unaccessible...password protected or has
a / or other incorrect punctuation in it.

I have now confirmed that this is a problem on two
servers, that happened at the same time.
