I want an MP3 management app, preferably some kind of fully featured
database that lets me manage my MP3s.
I've heard JuK is good but I can't get it working. Does anyone use any
alternatives? I have Xmms, but that's just a player, not a manager.

I've just installed an RPM of Amarok after doing a Google
search for a Mandrake rpm.

Have a look at madman at http://madman.sourceforge.net it's probably
something like what you're looking for. It allows you to simply tell it
where your mp3s are stored, then it reads the tags and constructs its own
database of your collection.
It allows rating of songs, dynamically changeable playlists based on rules
as well as being a tag editor to boot. Note that it requires XMMS to
actually play the mp3s, and this it controlls remotely.

Just looked at the website. That looks good. That looks very good
indeed. I hope I can get it running this weekend!

This also looks really cool, cheers. There's a list of alternatives (not
necessarily linux) on that page too:
iTunes (Mac)
MoodLogic (Win)
MusicMatch (Win)
Rhythmbox (Linux)
Yammi (Linux)
JuK (Linux)
Mp3Kult (Linux)
Zinf (Linux)

Prokyon3 uses a real mysql database, deals with mp3/ogg CDs, has nice tag
editing, playlists, generates auto-playlists, etc. It uses xmms to
actually play the files. I used it for quite some time, but settled with
Rhythmbox eventually, as it is maturing to a usable level.

I ran across a nice jukebox app called Yammi a while back - went back to Juk
once ogg-vorbis support was compiled back in, but Yammi seemed pretty good
(think it was ~v0.5 at that point).
What problems are you having with Juk? The version I'm using that came with
Mdk10.0 works fine for me (Juk 2.0).

Tell us what version of Mandrake and KDE you're using and someone will
surely post a link to a working rpm.
For something simple try Jamboree, it's not quite "cooked" yet,but is a
tiny download and functional, something to tide you over.
I know it's not a manager per se, but I really like to use noatun + the
hayes playlist when logged into KDE--the hayes playlist is a simple
expandable file heirarchy of your mp3 folders where you can switch
branches on and off. Makes a lot more sense when you see it LOL. Noatun
should be installed, you can just go to rpm.pbone.net and search for a
hayes rpm--it's a tiny download. :D
There's Rythmbox, but it's a GTK2 app--I use it a bit under gnome,but it's
not well integrated to KDE.
If you have an ipod or not--you can listen to your tunes with gtkpod.
For a commandline jukebox I LOVE Cymbaline.py
You'll get Juk working just fine :P

Well, that would be nice
=====Version Info=====
Linux localhost 2.4.21-0.13mdksecure #1 SMP Fri Mar 14 14:10:36 EST 2003
i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux
Mandrake Linux release 9.1 (Bamboo) for i586
======================
I run IceWM (so much quicker than KDE) but I have KDE installed so I can
run KDE apps within IceWM.
At the moment I've got a copy of Juk to *run*, but it spews a load of
identical errors:
Kio (kmimetype):warning:kservicetype::offers
:servicetype
application/octet-stream not found
Once loaded, the play button in Juk does nothing, no sound, no visual
feedback, as if disabled.
Google implies that the octet-stream error is perhaps something to do
with missing file-extensions, but information is scant.
Other programs (e.g. xine and xmms) play fine.
I've ordered a new hard drive this week so I can try out MDK10 on a
separate disk, in the hope that it solves the problem.
