lHello,

I am trying to set up a SMTP server in Windows server 2000. I already insta
lled the SMTP virtual server and now I am trying to find the pop3 protocol t
o go along with it. Any suggestions? I cannot believe that win2k server in
cludes SMTP but does not in
clude POP3. Is there one I can dowload that will be the complement to SMTP?

Thanks,

John

Hi,

The only way to get MS POP3 on Windows 2000 is to install Exchange. You may
want to look into that, or other alternatives in order to accomplish POP3

Only reply by newsgroup. I do not do technical support via email. Any
emails I have not authorized are deleted before I see them.

Thanks for the reply, but for the price or probably a lot less I could upgra
de to 2003. Anyway, this is just a startup company so they don't want to sp
end that much money.
I did down load one freeware product that I will try.

Thanks,

John,

Which shareware/freeware application did you use for pop
services and where you satisfied with its performance? I
am faced with performing the same task and have found
many out there but have not tried any yet.

thanks for any help you can provide!

Third party POP servers abound. Mercury Mail is a popular free one,
and iMail has a personal version available now as well.

Dont want to spend much money? Then i suggest that you go with a hosting
company for email. Getting an email server to work is not just as simple as
installing SMTP and POP3. You need to configure a lot of other things too.
This is because spam is sent from many home machines, and if the email
server is not trusted, you will have problems sending your emails to other
email servers. Also, many ISPs want you to pay extra money if you want port
25 open.

Personally, I use MailEnable. The free version has been very robust. The Pro
versions aren't that expensive either.
